YOUR NEW OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Mozambique Field Coordinator, the Mozambique Lead Engineer & Nampula Team Leader will collaborate with the national and in-country leadership teams on several matters. In particular, the Mozambique Lead Engineer & Nampula Team Leader will develop and implement strategies and supervise activities around the Mozambique project, and its operations, administration, engineering, advocacy, and technical issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES AS MOZAMBIQUE LEAD ENGINEER

  • For Project in Mozambique:
    • Oversight: Responsible, with the support of the Africa & Middle East Structural Engineer Associate, for direction and work product of Mozambique engineering and technical staff. Oversee Build Change engineering and design work in Mozambique for technical excellence, applicability, simplicity, and compliance with Build Change standards and philosophy of disaster-resistance, sustainability, climate adaptation and cultural appropriateness.
    • Project QA/QC: Perform internal reviews of design processes and construction quality on projects.
    • New works areas: Set up the technical program in new project areas as Build Change expands its activities in Mozambique, including conducting surveys of typical construction and reviewing existing technical resources for applicability and adaptation in the new areas.
    • Technical resources:
      • Develop, with the support of the Africa & Middle East Structural Engineer Associate, thorough, comprehensive understanding of the structural engineering design resources developed by Build Change for home improvement, retrofitting and new construction solutions.
      • Review, with the support of the Africa & Middle East Structural Engineer Associate, field revisions or updates to Build Change’s design guidelines made by local Build Change staff for technical excellence, applicability, simplicity, and compliance with Build Change standards and philosophy of disaster-resistance, sustainability, climate adaptation and cultural appropriateness.
      • Work with and oversee Build Change staff and consultants in the adaptation of existing resources and the creation of new resources for Mozambique for technical excellence, applicability, simplicity, and compliance with Build Change standards and philosophy of disaster-resistance, sustainability, climate adaptation and cultural appropriateness.
      • Review new training materials in all Build Change operations for technical compliance.
      • Oversee the translation of Build Change technical resources as necessary.
    • Post-Disaster Response: If required, conduct remote organization of, and/or perform, post-disaster M-T-P evaluations and reports, with the support of the Africa & Middle East Structural Engineer Associate, in Mozambique.
    • Africa & Middle East Support: Support the Africa & Middle East Structural Engineer Associate, as required.
  • Administrative and Operational Responsibilities:
    • Knowledge Management: Participate in Engineering Team Calls coordinated by the Africa & Middle East Structural Engineer Associate.
    • Engineering Strategy: Assist in the development and execution of Build Change engineering program strategy and report on progress, specifically as it relates to Mozambique.
    • Recruiting: Interview and assist in hiring technical staff for Build Change Mozambique operations.
    • Reporting: Prepare monthly reports and contribute to internal and external project reports.
  • Advocacy Responsibilities: Support activities geared toward Build Change advocacy in Mozambique, ensuring that the technical components are accurately represented. As needed, represent Build Change at technical conferences, conventions, and engineering societies & focus groups.
  • General Responsibilities:
    • Location & Travel: Job located in Nampula, Mozambique, with occasional travel to Maputo and to other project areas such as Nacala, Pemba and Montepuez.
    • Safety: Observe and oversee the implementation of Build Change’s Construction Site Safety Policy, wear personal protective equipment on construction sites, and promote construction site safety within our projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES AS NAMPULA TEAM LEADER

  • Project Management: Under the supervision of the Mozambique Field Coordinator, lead project activities in the city of Nampula, including:
    • Trainings
    • Project participants selection
    • Home-improvements prototypes, pilots and full-scale implementation
    • Post occupation activities
  • Operations: Set-up and maintain the project field office in Nampula. Arrange for travel and lodging for visiting project team members. Maintain functional, up-to-date IT systems including hardware and software, ensuring data remains backed up, virus free, and secure. Maintain phone and internet systems and implement systems for remote communication. Gather, approve and submit Nampula team timecards every pay period.
    • Ethics: Ensure that the Nampula team members operate consistently and ethically within the mission and values of Build Change.
    • Safety & Security: Nampula area Security Focal Point. Implement Build Change Mozambique Safety & Security SOPs in all Nampula field activities.
    • Reporting: Responsible for timely and accurate internal reporting of project activities in Nampula. Prepare weekly and monthly reports on project activities.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Accredited Structural Engineer in Mozambique.
  • Five years of experience in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Five years of project management experience in NGO/UN/Development work.
  • Experience managing a technical team.
  • Willingness to be based full-time in Nampula.

Other Requirements

  • This position is open to Mozambique Nationals only.
  • This position requires fluency in Portuguese and English.
