Deutsche Welle (DW) is seeking Multimedia Journalists (f/m/d) English for Africa for Programming in Abuja, Nigeria, in Accra, Ghana and in Nairobi, Kenya as of 1 November 2024 or as soon as possible on the basis of a freelance contract limited for two years.

DW English for Africa is looking for multimedia journalists for Abuja, Nigeria, for Accra, Ghana and for Nairobi, Kenya! Are you passionate about storytelling? Do you have an eye for capturing a news story in a captivating video format? DW’s English for Africa Desk is recruiting multimedia journalists for Abuja, Nigeria, for Accra, Ghana and for Nairobi, Kenya to produce news stories and reports from the ground. Whether you specialize in breaking news coverage, or feature stories, we want to hear from you! The multimedia journalists will be reporting directly on location, you should therefore be willing to work from one of the locations (please indicate possible locations in the application) – Nigeria: Abuja, Ghana: Accra or Kenya: Nairobi.

YOUR CHALLENGES

  • independent production of web videos in English, from writing the script, research, dramaturgy of storytelling, editing, to the final video
  • contribute to the development and implementation of formats for our social media platforms, especially Facebook and TikTok
  • mobile reporting and creation of web videos
  • journalistic research and close team collaboration on content and distribution

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

  • completed university studies in the field of journalism and relevant professional experience in a multimedia broadcasting and editorial operation in the areas of social media, web video and mobile reporting as well as in online journalism
  • sound knowledge of social media (Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter/X, Facebook) as a news gathering tool, as well as a confident assessment of trends and issues in social media
  • strong skills working with digital media and experience developing formats
  • excellent storytelling skills for videos and texts of varying lengths and the ability to propose original topics; experience with Adobe Premiere is a plus
  • extensive knowledge of current political, economic, social and cultural conditions in Africa
  • extensive knowledge of international politics and current affairs; knowledge of current political, economic, and cultural conditions in Germany and Europe
  • ability to work in interdisciplinary and diverse teams, high level of intercultural sensitivity and respect for diversity
  • very good knowledge of English, as well as knowledge of at least one other locally relevant language; German language proficiency an advantage
