The Decarbonising Humanitarian Energy (DHE) Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Project, founded in 2023, aims to reduce the cost and greenhouse gas emissions associated with delivering critical humanitarian assistance. This project is a collaboration between NORCAP, the GPA Coordination Unit at UNITAR, and UNDP, focusing on scaling up sustainable energy solutions for organisations serving displaced people and host communities. By joining forces, we aim to mobilise and combine existing services and tools into a single facility to coordinate and scale up energy cost reduction measures across various clients, geographies, and focus areas.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled National Energy Expert to join our team in Nigeria. This role involves extensive travel within Nigeria, including remote and conflict-affected areas, and is initially for 12 months with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities

As the DHE National Energy Expert, you will take on the following responsibilities:

  • In close collaboration with the DHE Regional Energy Expert, support the planning and implementation of infrastructure decarbonisation efforts within Nigeria.
  • Conduct assessments of existing energy systems and provide recommendations on improvements.
  • Install energy measuring devices and train partners on their operation.
  • Conduct energy efficiency audits and prepare technical documents for upgrade works.
  • Identify and evaluate solar energy resources and locations for installation.
  • Provide advice on end-user energy access and support the development of renewable energy solutions.
  • Undertake field missions for project-specific tasks, surveys, and monitoring & evaluation activities.
  • Develop project reports, cost analysis, budgets, and detailed cost estimations for electrical systems upgrades.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications and skills:

Academic qualifications: University degree : BSC in electrical engineering, engineering, sustainable development studies, energy technology or relevant fields.

Experience

  1. A minimum of five (5) years relevant professional experience in a private sector EPC and/or energy supply, consulting firm or social enterprise with energy infrastructure focus; or UN/humanitarian/development agency working directly on operationalising renewable energy transitions.
  2. Familiarity with and Professional experience in energy infrastructure topic, renewable energy systems design, implementation, and monitoring.
  3. Knowledge of electrical Installation standards such as IEC, NFC 15-100 standards etc.
  4. Knowledge of electrical designs plans and block diagrams.
  5. Knowledge of different energy and private sector-related regulatory and/or policy frameworks and ability to link to other sectors in Nigeria.
  6. Proven experience conducting energy audits and renewable energy systems sizing. Having performed: Single Line Diagram identification, safe use and data processing from energy loggers, measure and identify loads, identify, and assess energy efficiency measures, hybrid renewable energy system operation and maintenance.
  7. Have a good understanding of energy standards and audits.
  8. Experience working in humanitarian or global development settings and/or for the UN or other humanitarian/development agencies preferred.
  9. Good knowledge of the energy sector in the selected country, challenges faced in the integration of renewable energy in existing buildings and management of procurement tenders in the energy sector.
  10. Experience in team management and knowledge of project management tools skills are a plus.

Essential requirements

  1. Demonstrated experience in the design and application of electrical energy solutions, especially renewable technology.
  2. Experience in the planning, design, budgeting and management of electrical energy systems and energy standards and audits.
  3. Demonstrated experience in data collection, research, and analysis.
  4. Have a good understanding of testing equipment and the process of testing, inspection, verification and commissioning.
  5. Extensive knowledge of financial, regulatory and/or policy frameworks, renewable energy financial management.
  6. Familiarity with renewable energy business development is an asset.
  7. Ability to meet reporting deadlines, manage budgets and complete quarterly and yearly reporting.

Language: Fluency in English is essential, knowledge of local languages in Nigeria is an asset.
