Position: Nutrition Technical Coordinator

Location: El Fasher, North Darfur state (60%) and Blue Nile state (40%)

Reports to: Deputy Country Director (DCD) of Programs – Sudan

Duration: 12 months

The people that we serve live in seventeen countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia where the debilitating effects of political instability, forced displacement, and natural disasters are pervasive. Often, RI is the only organization providing healthcare, nutrition, livelihood, education, logistics, energy, capacity building, economic development, sanitation, and many other forms of assistance to these highly vulnerable communities and in hard to reach locations.

Summary:

Position Summary:

The Nutrition Technical Coordinator’s role is to lead, and provide technical support for the planning and smooth implementation of nutrition activities throughout RI’s country nutrition program. The Nutrition Coordinator shall ensure quality implementation of project activities and shall build capacity of national staff and ensure timely and quality program reporting and sound budget management. He/ She will participate in cluster meeting at national and state levels. This position includes the active involvement in continuously developing and rolling out the country nutrition strategy based on the specific context, assessments/needs identified; monitoring the implementation of nutrition projects, providing support supervision to nutrition facilities/ staff, and ensuring overall country program goals are achieved in line with donors and S/MOH’s MOUs. In addition, the Nutrition Coordinator will support with the overall capacity building of local staff and stakeholders in Nutrition.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Management & Implementation

  • Provide technical leadership and support to program teams; oversee and coordinate development of nutrition activity, develop detailed implementation plans and budget forecasts, and technically manage nutrition field teams to ensure timely achievement of high quality deliverables as planned.
  • Ensure that technical quality and standards are upheld during project implementation; access and analyze nutrition activities progress continuously through lessons learned, field assessments and provide corrective measures where applicable; design and implement response plans, and identify opportunities for innovation, improvement and adaptive management.
  • Coordinate with other sector leads (Health, WASH, Livelihood, and MEAL) to ensure multi-sector programming and high level of integration across sectors, with focus on social inclusion and cross-cutting issues (e.g. gender, protection, climate, and sustainability within all nutrition interventions).
  • Coordinate with field teams to ensure the proper execution of the Nutrition program against all set objectives and targets within the agreed budgets and timeframes.
  • Implement and maintain reporting systems to monitor and evaluate the Nutrition objectives, indicators and outcomes of the projects. Contribute to the creation of reports, ensuring the quality and accuracy of technical information provided as well as the confidentiality of internal information as required. Support field teams in regular budgetary follow up to ensure timely expenditure of nutrition budgets.
  • Ensure gender and protection is considered throughout the project cycle, with women being enabled to influence decision making around Nutrition challenges
  • Liaise with all internal and external counterparts of the project; ensure external representation of RI in relevant sectors including participating in technical and sectoral meetings to ensure visibility amongst local authorities. Pass relevant information to the Country Senior Management Team.
  • Ensure a positive and safe working environment and good team dynamics (solve out potential conflicts) and promote team working conditions. Work closely with program support functions (logistics and finance departments) for Nutrition program supplies and activities planning.
  • Any other task as delegated by the Supervisor.

Program Development

  • Lead nutrition assessments, projects design and proposals development.
  • Identify and stay updated on the latest Nutrition sector best practice within the country through routine engagement and dialogue with the relevant Government of Sudan offices, the Cluster network, and the international community as applicable to the Sudan context. Evaluate the options and propose innovations and updates to RI Sudan’s Nutrition sector services to ensure provision of the highest quality sustainable services possible, and to maintain RI’s competitive advantage in the field.
  • Provide sectoral and technical leadership to the design of, and engage in rapid needs assessments and their analysis, and ensure their linkage to activity plans and budgets.
  • Assess in-country resources and capacities (human, material and financial) for Nutrition program roll out, and ensure provision of requisite capacity building.
  • Formulate the overall aims and objectives of the nutrition response program through ongoing development and refinement of a clear Nutrition Strategy.
  • Select and design the most appropriate form of Nutrition systems, and Nutrition services and public Nutrition promotion programs taking full account of local conditions, resources, customs and cultural norms. Ensure sustainability and capacity building is fundamental components of these systems and programs.
  • Ensure Government of Sudan, WHO, Sphere and any other relevant standards are considered through the program cycle and are well documented.
  • Develop concept papers, letters of intent, proposals and budgets related to the above.

Qualifications & Requirements:

This position demands a dynamic individual with a demonstrated ability to achieve results in a demanding and fast paced environment.

  • Bachelor Degree in Nutrition & Dietetics or Bachelor Degree in Human Nutrition
  • Master’s Degree in Nutrition or Public Health or other relevant qualifications.
  • At least 10 years’ work experience in the implementation and management of nutrition programs in reputable organizations.
  • Vast experience in the implementation of CMAM and maternal infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN).
  • Experience in the implementation of UNICEF and WFP program: CMAM, IYCF and GFD. Understanding of FAO programming.
  • Excellent written and oral English skills, including proofreading. Must be able to draft high quality donor reports and proposals.
  • Experience in project management, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience and understanding of key donors’ policies, guidelines and strategies; e.g. USAID, BHA, ECHO, FDCO and UN agencies.
  • Must be able to function effectively in a fluid, loosely structured, but complex work environment and to set appropriate priorities and deal effectively with numerous requirements.
  • Must be able to work independently, with minimum supervision, within the context of a larger team.
  • Capacity to represent and enhance visibility of RI and to work in collaboration with local authorities, including SMOH.
  • Strong coordination skills; flexibility, adaptability, and strong facilitation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.

  • Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity to cultural differences.
