Program Coordinator at Hunger Relief International

1. Background

The Hunger Relief International Foundation is a Non-Profit Jewish-Christian organization with a continuous presence in Guatemala for more than 10 years. FHRI works to improve and protect the lives of poor children and families by building resilience, fighting hunger, promoting family unity, and increasing self-sufficiency. Its main lines of action are community organization and the generation of educational and economic development opportunities.

Given its successful experience in the western highlands and urban areas of Guatemala and San Miguel Petapa, FHRI has submitted a project proposal to the U.S. Agency for Development Cooperation (USAID) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to help address the structural causes of irregular migration. This through access to formal education and the strengthening of technical-vocational capacities, skills for employment or entrepreneurship and the increase in the participation and incidence of young people, women and indigenous people in decision-making in spaces of local organization in the municipalities of Quetzaltenango (Palajunoj Valley) , Concepción Chiquirichapa, Guatemala and San Miguel Petapa.

In that sense, FHRI is interested in selecting a project coordinator to lead and guide the activities according to the proposal sent to IOM and USAID.

2. Responsibilities

Together with the national director and the FHRI headquarters team,the coordinator will be responsible for the technical and financial implementation of the Mujb’ab’il Kyxim Qya ex Ku’xin (Women and Youth Weaving Knowledge) project. This includes ensuring compliance with activities, outputs and impacts, as well as the transparent execution of financial resources in accordance with FHRI’s policies.

It will also be in charge of carrying out the actions of articulation and interrelation with key actors in the four municipalities, seeking rapprochement with local and indigenous authorities taking into consideration the principles of action without harm, gender equity, positive youth development, local approach, government leadership, among others.

Based in Quetzaltenango, the coordinator will provide guidance and coordination to the project’s three field technicians, two located in Quetzaltenango and one in Guatemala. In addition, it will be in charge of implementing the monitoring and evaluation plan and its three axes using the results monitoring framework and the verification tools and means designed by FHRI, in coordination with USAID and IOM. The coordinator or coordinator will be responsible for the preparation of progress reports, as well as the review of financial reports. She will have regular meetings with the FHRI team in Guatemala and the United States and will report directly to the FHRI country director in Guatemala.

It will also include other activities that the national director and the FHRI team request.

3. Requirements

The candidate’s profile is described below in three sections:

1. Education and experience

  • Master’s degree in development, project management, social work or related careers
  • Bachelor’s degree in development, social work, psychology or related careers
  • 10 years of experience in coordination and monitoring of development projects with a local focus and with emphasis on vulnerable groups, including indigenous people, women and youth
  • 5 years of experience in project monitoring and evaluation processes and knowledge of finance, human resources and procurement of goods and services (preferably funded by USAID or a United Nations agency)
  • 5 years of experience in coordination and management positions of multidisciplinary teams (at least 2 people in charge)
  • Experience of work in communities of the Guatemalan highlands will be valued

2. Skills

  • Adaptability and conflict resolution skills
  • Preferably knowledge of English
  • Knowledge of one of the Mayan, K’iché or Mam languages will be valued.

3. Other

  • Preferably resident in Quetzaltenango and belonging to an indigenous community
  • Immediate availability
  • You must show a vaccination card with the complete picture before COVID-19
  • One-year contract (to be signed once the proposal is officially approved by USAID-IOM)
