About PI

Protection International (PI) is an International NGO that contributes to the improvement of the protection of human rights defenders (HRDs) throughout the world. PI provides tools to develop HRDs’ capacities to manage their own security as their struggle against impunity and work in favour of human rights and democracy in their respective countries or regions. PI seeks to contribute to a situation where HRDs are recognised as legitimate actors for social change and to an environment where they can exercise their right to defend universally accepted human rights.

Protection International has its global office in Brussels, but primarily works where protection of HRDs is needed. PI has long-term presence in several countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Under its Global Strategy 2019-2023, PI is gradually transforming into a network of Hubs, establishing regional offices that work in a flexible manner across several countries.

General Objective of the position

The Programme and Fundraising Coordinator – (focus Central and Latin America) will contribute to the Programme Coordination Unit implementation strategy concerning regional and global fundraising initiatives, while ensuring the proper implementation of programmes and projects in the designated geographical area.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Guidance:

  • Contribute to the update and implementation of the PI Fundraising, Financial Resilience and Sustainability Strategy (FRSS).
  • Provide overarching global, regional, and national guidance on programming, strategic partnerships, alliances, and consortium building to fulfil PI’s mission.
  • Offer strategic advice internally to PI entities in Central and Latin America regarding funding opportunities, programme development and implementation, and partnerships.
  • Promote dialogue with donors and key stakeholders to increase investments in resourcing for the preventative and collective protection

Programming and Reporting:

  • Stay informed about the political and human rights situation in Latin America and contribute to internal political analysis.
  • Support the designing and implementation of PI’s strategic framework at Hub and Country Office levels in Central Latin America.
  • Provide strategic guidance on programme implementation, emphasizing compliance with contractual obligations and donor rules, as well as quality of implementation and reporting, as well as on accountability to HRDs.
  • Consolidate reports for key donors at the regional and global level by gathering key information and data from other units, regional hubs, and country offices through regular monitoring.
  • Pursue new programmatic trends, such as defenders from LGBTI, youth, and disability communities, aligning with donors’ evolving trends.
  • Participate in the harmonisation of standards and procedures for programming and fundraising, including grant management software.
  • Support initiatives to consolidate a harmonised MEAL system across the organisation.
  • Coordinate with Finance & Administration Unit for financial reporting, ensuring that finance reports align with narrative reports.
  • Collaborate with other units to ensure the quality of communication, advocacy, and research activities.
  • Participate in key international and European mechanisms, initiatives, and networks (EULAT, OIDACO).

Fundraising and Donor Management:

  • Focus on leading large-scale, regional, and multi-partners programming and fundraising initiatives while assisting local teams with smaller, local projects and fundraising initiatives.
  • Work on strengthening relationships with donors to foster a partnership mindset
  • Manage relationships with key donors, focusing on donor cultivation, retention, and stewardship.
  • Represent PI in strategic meetings and events to identify new fundraising opportunities, enhance visibility, build trust, and scout for new donors and partners.
  • Initiate and lead global fundraising initiatives (EU/US institutional donors and private foundations).
  • Co-lead fundraising efforts with regional teams, including support in tailored fundraising plans and strategic partnerships in the region, and development of strategic & high quality proposals.
  • Analyse funding trends relevant to the HRD sector and identify new financial sources to ensure PI’s continuity of operations.

Job Requirements

Education

A relevant degree – preferably a Masters’ degree – in Social Sciences (political science, Human rights, sociology, international relations, anthropology), educational sciences and similar fields.

Relevant professional training courses (Human Rights Defenders, humanitarian and development sector, management, etc.)

Experience

Minimum eight years’ experience in large scale programme management, including 4 years of management of projects in Latin America

Demonstrate experience in complex grant management, proposal writing and drafting of quality reports.

Excellent knowledge of the Human Rights fundraising landscape, with a focus on EU /US institutional and private donors.

Experience on protection and security management for grassroots organisations and human rights defenders

Experience in monitoring projects remotely is necessary

Skills & Knowledge

A demonstrable focus on human rights and relevant working experience in Central and Latin America is required

Familiarity with gender equality and intersectional issues (gender, disability, age, social class issues) is an asset.

Attention to details, ability to work under pressure and solution oriented.

Strong and efficient communication skills, capacity to navigate sensitive situations tactfully

Able to work in teams as well as to take initiative and work autonomously.

Availability to travel to Latin America twice per year

Languages

Fluency in English and Spanish (written and oral) is essential.

Very good working knowledge of French is a strong asset

Other requirements
