We work with people impacted by war and violence, bringing diverse voices together to make change that lasts. For over 25 years, we have been making peace possible. We currently have over 70 full and part-time staff members. We work with over 70 locally-based and international partners worldwide.

Horn of Africa Programme
Conciliation Resources has been active in the Horn of Africa since 2012. Our work predominantly focuses on Ethiopia and Kenya and to a lesser extent Somalia. We have locally-based staff-consultants in Kenya and Ethiopia as well as a satellite office in Jigjiga, Somali regional state of Ethiopia. The Horn of Africa programme is committed to continuing to work in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia as well as cross-cutting themes of promoting peacebuilding and good governance across the Horn of Africa region. We would also like to develop the programme to meet new demands working with new partners in new areas.

Job purpose

The Programme Officer will provide project, administrative and logistical support necessary for the implementation of the Horn of Africa programme. The post holder will play a key role in supporting our work and teams in Ethiopia and Kenya across the areas in which we work.

The Programme Officer may also support cross-programmatic initiatives including within the Africa Department. Reporting to the Horn of Africa Programme Manager, the Programme Officer will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, or Jigjiga, Ethiopia and will undertake occasional travel within the region.

Person specification

Essential knowledge, skills and experience

● Understanding of and interest in peacebuilding and conflict transformation processes.
● Strong organisational skills including planning, developing, implementing and maintaining administrative systems, tools, and processes.
● Project management skills including planning, implementing and monitoring project activities, and strong financial and narrative reporting skills.
● Experience in supporting financial management of projects and programmes, including preparing budgets, monitoring organisational and partner expenditure and supporting financial reporting to donors and for internal purposes.
● Experience of working in a multicultural environment across different time zones.
● Experience remotely supporting teams and partners on the successful joint delivery of work.
● Willingness to work irregular hours occasionally and to undertake some international travel
● Strong commitment to, and experience of, team and cross-organisational working.
● Appreciation of issues of confidentiality, and cross-cultural and political sensitivity.
● Initiative, proactiveness, enthusiasm and a problem-solving approach to new challenges.
● Ability and willingness to travel to areas affected by conflict.
● Excellent written and spoken English and local languages (Somali, Amharic, Kiswahili) in programme contexts are highly desirable.
● Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Google applications (Gmail and Google Docs) in a Mac environment.

Desirable knowledge, skills and experience

● Experience in institutional fundraising, including development of project proposals and budgets in response to closed and open calls.
● Experience supporting partners on the successful joint delivery of work and accompanying partners with limited organisational (financial and management) capacities.
● Living and working experience in the Horn of Africa.
● Completed hostile environment training in the past 3 years, of willingness to undertake hostile environment training.
