JOB PURPOSE

The current global food crisis risks heightening inequalities and vulnerabilities in a world still confronting the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Asia-Pacific region, as a result of the pandemic, 75 to 80 million people were driven into extreme poverty. WFP estimates that the repercussions of the war will push another 7.3 million people into acute food insecurity in the region in 2022.

The key factors currently contributing to increased food insecurity are decreased access to nutritious foods, reduced purchasing power and increased cost of living. Other stressors include higher prices and reduced affordability, and decreased availability of nutritious foods due to production and supply chain disruptions and shrinking foreign reserves to pay for imports. As the Asia-Pacific region already carries the majority of the world’s malnourished, reduced access to a nutritious diet can further exacerbate wasting, stunting and micronutrient deficiencies among the most vulnerable. WFP has a critical role to play in addressing sustainable access to and availability of food in the medium to long term to ensure that development and nutrition gains are not eroded during this precarious period.
