It is surrounded on three sides by oceans and on the North by the Himalayan Mountain range Home to the world’s largest population, people are spread out across the peninsular nation, from the foothills of the Himalayas to the tropical south. India’s population core is settled along the Ganges river basin, a densely populated swath of fertile land that extends across the northern Himalayan border. More than half the population is under age 30 and less than one-fourth is age 45 or older.

India shows considerable diversity on social and cultural parameters. For example it is home to more than two thousand ethnic groups.

Civil society in India is noted for its vibrancy, innovation and research-based advocacy. It has played an important role in supporting government as a partner in nation-building. In India the voluntary sector does not simply fill gaps in the government’s service delivery system; it contributes significantly to the country’s GDP. In May 2007, the cabinet of ministers of the
Government of India approved the National Policy (https://ngosindia.com/documents/government-policy-on-voluntary-sector.pdf) on the voluntary sector as the first step in a process to evolve a new working relationship between the government and volunteer organizations. In the state of Orissa, the civil society space is occupied by a rich diversity of individual activists, community-based organisations, self-help groups, gender-, environment-, culture-, religion- and ethnicity-based lobby and pressure groups, trade
