Regional Business Development Coordinator At Danish Refugee Council

Location: Temporarily based in the RO Dhaka, to be subsequently relocated to Bangkok, pending DRC’s registration in Thailand

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Regional Business Development Coordinator will lead strategic business development processes for DRC’s Asia regional office. Specifically, the position will be charged to develop and update comprehensive donor mapping, to design and implement fundraising strategies and to lead new business development processes for country, regional, multi-country and strategic funding opportunities.

In particular, the Coordinator will be tasked to identify and pursue non-traditional donors and funding opportunities, including foundations, collaborations with the private sector and other alternative funding mechanisms. The position will lead the following critical functions: 1. Building donor relationships 2. Fundraising and horizon scanning 3. Attracting high net worth private philanthropy and foundations 4. Supporting large and cross-cutting bids and proactive thinking 5. Building systems 6. Managing frameworks and consultancies 7. Facilitating partnerships management

The position will work closely with the Regional Head of Programme and country-level Heads of Programme to ensure processes and procedures are in place to promote best practices in grants management and donor compliance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

STRATEGIC ENGAGEMENT

  • Lead donor mapping exercises and the maintenance of a comprehensive donor database for DRC’s Asia region. This entails close collaboration with DRC’s COs in Asia, DRC’s global donor focal points, DRC’s Programme Innovation and Business Engagement (PIBE) initiative, and independent research to identify new business and fundraising opportunities.
  • Based on donor mapping, develop and lead a regional fundraising strategy that includes collaborating with the Regional Director, Regional Head of Programme and Country Directors to establish and maintain constructive relationships with existing and potential donors. This entails proactive engagement with both new and institutional donors at the regional level to introduce concepts for cooperation and donorship, and to influence policy and funding priorities.
  • Assists the Regional Head of Programme to identifying and establish strategic regional partnerships and engagement with other international NGOs, national NGOs and civil society organizations at the regional level.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

  • Collaborate with the regional programme and support teams to identify strategic programme priorities, to monitor funding and to develop and achieve fundraising goals.
  • Lead the design of multi-country, regional and multi-regional projects, including both DRC-initiated concepts and calls for proposals. This will entail close collaboration with the Regional Head of Programme, country Heads of Programme and technical coordinators.
  • Upon the request of the Regional Head of Programme, support country programmes with strategic new business development initiatives, in particular, with the development of complex proposals and proposals for new donors, which country programmes do not have experience with.
  • Support the regional office and country programmes with the development of consortium projects, including the provision of advice pertaining to the design of consortium management and coordination structures and sub-granting processes.
  • Lead the development of commercial bids and advise in commercial contracting processes.
  • Upon the request of the Regional Head of Programme, provide quality and compliance reviews of strategic or high-risk proposals and reports prepared by country offices.

GRANTS MANAGEMENT AND DONOR COMPLIANCE

  • Act as a DRC Dynamics Superuser for the Grants Module and support with regional and country-level trainings.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database and dashboard of the Asia grants portfolio and prepare monthly analysis of ongoing grants and fundraising initiatives for use by DRC’s Asia regional senior management team.
  • Act as the primary focal point between country offices and DRC’s headquarters to ensure that global policies and procedures related to grants, fundraising and donor compliance are comprehensively rolled out across country programs.
  • Lead the region in developing capacity to manage non-traditional funding, including commercial contracts and other non-grant-based mechanisms.

Experience and Technical Competencies:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience at a senior level leading strategic new business development and fundraising efforts.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the development of high-value and complex proposal to humanitarian or development donors. Experience engaging non-traditional donors and alternative funding mechanisms is a distinct advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of new business development and fundraising strategies, as well as experience forming and maintaining donor relations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of humanitarian programming and the Asia context.
  • Experience implementing and supporting donor compliance and accountability policies and procedures.
  • Political and cultural sensitivity as well as patience, tact, diplomacy and persistence.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across Asia, including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Education:

Master’s degree in business administration, social sciences or other relevant subject area.

Languages:

Excellent written and spoken English required.
