The Decarbonising Humanitarian Energy (DHE) Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Project, founded in 2023, aims to reduce the cost and greenhouse gas emissions associated with delivering critical humanitarian assistance. This project is a collaboration between NORCAP, the GPA Coordination Unit at UNITAR, and UNDP, focusing on scaling up sustainable energy solutions for organisations serving displaced people and host communities. By joining forces, we aim to mobilise and combine existing services and tools into a single facility to coordinate and scale up energy cost reduction measures across various clients, geographies, and focus areas.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Regional Energy Expert (REE) to join our team. This is a national post and will be based in Nigeria. The REE will be supported by two national energy experts.

This role involves extensive travel (30-50%) within Nigeria and is initially for 12 months with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities

As the DHE Regional Energy Expert, you will take on the following responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning and implementation of the infrastructural decarbonisation efforts within Nigeria in collaboration with the DHE partners (GPA, UNDP Energy Unit/ITM and NORCAP).
  • Support and validate mapping of the energy landscape in Nigeria by identifying coverage & adequacy issue, identify needs, opportunities & challenges of providing sustainable energy access to organizations’ infrastructure, communal facilities, displaced populations and host communities.
  • Support the development of decarbonisation and energy access projects for end-users that involve private sector engagement, local governments, and innovative financing mechanisms.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • Advanced university degree: MSc in engineering, electrical engineering, environmental management, sustainable energy technology, or relevant fields.
  • Minimum of six years of relevant professional experience in energy supply, consulting, or humanitarian/development agencies working directly on operationalizing renewable energy transitions.
  • Proven experience in project management within the renewable energy sector.
  • Familiarity with energy infrastructure technology, renewable energy systems design, and energy audits.
  • Having performed: Single Line Diagram identification, safe use and data processing from energy loggers, measure and identify loads, identify, and assess energy efficiency measures, renewable energies assessment, hybrid renewable energy system sizing and modelling.
  • Master software tools like office package, HOMER Pro, PVsyst and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Knowledge of different energy and private sector-related regulatory and/or policy frameworks.
  • Proven experience in data collection and analysis with strong communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of the energy sector in Nigeria and the stakes/ challenges in the integration of renewable energy in buildings and the management of tenders in the energy sector.
  • Experience in team management and remote management is an asset.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of another UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic) is an asset.
