Regional Researcher – Myanmar At Amnesty International

JOB PURPOSE

As Amnesty International’s expert on Myanmar, you will monitor and document human rights violations in the country with the goal of achieving positive human rights impact.

ABOUT YOU

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Investigate, monitor, and document human rights violations in Myanmar in order to provide expert, accurate, and objective advice on these issues, and to develop effective strategies for achieving positive change;
  • Collect and analyze information from a wide variety of sources, including government officials, local and international media, NGOs, lawyers, journalists, diplomats, and others;
  • Write reports, briefing papers, and other materials for publication and internal use, and provide advice on materials produced by other programmes;
  • Represent Amnesty International publicly, including in governmental, inter-governmental, and other for a, as well as with the news media, civil society organizations, and others;
  • Contribute to the development of country and regional strategies relating to research and campaigning, and provide input into internal Amnesty International discussions;
  • Coordinate work with other Amnesty International staff, including by preparing work plans and budgets;
  • Travel domestically and internationally, as necessary to conduct factfinding missions, advocacy, and other activities;
  • Deliver outputs in a timely manner, consistent with agreed strategies and priorities;
  • Participate in the recruitment and induction of new staff, consultants, volunteers, and interns;
  • Perform all necessary administrative tasks;
  • Carry out other duties as required.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

  • Substantial experience in conducting research on human rights or related issues
  • In-depth knowledge of Myanmar, preferably first-hand experience working in the country, and a good understanding of its key human rights concerns, as well as related political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues
  • Ability to speak fluently any of the local languages used in Myanmar
  • Ability to understand and express ideas in English in a fluent, clear, logical, and concise way, both orally and in writing, and to draft different types of documents, including extended reports, government correspondence, and media and action materials

Desirable:

  • Ability to deal in a sensitive and understanding manner with a variety of people, including survivors of human rights violations and others who may be distressed
  • Ability to exercise sound political judgment and rigorous analysis to develop effective strategies to improve human rights conditions in the region
  • Ability to represent Amnesty International effectively to external stakeholders; and to communicate Amnesty International’s concerns, positions
  • Experience in writing research materials for a variety of audiences
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights, e.g. through previous work, membership of a human rights organization, involvement in advocacy of human rights, etc.
  • Experience of managing conflicting demands, meeting deadlines, and adjusting priorities
  • Ability and willingness to undertake personal administrative tasks in accordance with Amnesty International’s guidelines on self-servicing
  • Understanding of equal opportunities, cultural diversity and gender issues as well as a commitment to apply relevant policies
