About the position
The Research Associate – Tropical Forages will contribute to different projects and initiatives related to livestock, the environment, and tropical forages in East, Central and Southern Africa. He/she will contribute to multi-disciplinary projects on sustainable forage-based livestock production and be responsible for data collection and management, ex-ante modelling, training and output reporting.
Main duties and responsibilities include:
· Design data collection forms (Excel, ODK)
· Collect and collate primary and secondary data (through field measurements, surveys, FGDs, expert interviews)
· Design, populate and manage databases with household, feed, and environmental data (Excel, Access, MySQL)
· Maintain, improve and document existing ex-ante impact assessment tools (Excel and R programming)
· Train partners in the use of data collection and ex-ante impact assessment tools
· Independently analyze and model quantitative data using various household, livestock, crop and soil models
· Document data analysis and modelling outputs in research reports and research papers
Requirements
· Degree in Agricultural Sciences, Livestock Production, Natural Resource Management or other relevant field, with a focus and/or proven interest in rural development and sustainable food systems.
· At least two (2) years of relevant work experience in a closely related field
· Key strength in data collection and management
· Experience in designing survey tools in ICT based software such as Survey CTO or ODK
· Excellent Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Power Point and Excel.
· Experience with STATA, R or other analytical software
· Very good command of English, Kiswahili is an added advantage
· Experience in writing scientific articles will be an added advantage
· Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties
· Possess excellent analytical skills, respect for confidentiality and high level of integrity
· Good communication skills with a positive attitude and a strong service orientation
· Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
Terms of employment
This is a nationally recruited position based in Nairobi, Kenya. The contract will be for two-years period, subject to a probation period of three (3) months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
