Research Manager

Scope of Work

Reports to: GeoA Director

Location:Niamey, Niger (preferred) or fully remote with travel to the field depending on project needs.

Summary

The Research Manager is responsible for all GeoA research and data-focused programming. In this role, the position represents GeoA’s interests and priorities with key stakeholders, including donors, partners, government, and local communities. Based on these engagements, the Research Manager implements GeoA’s projects directly and supervising research officers, interns, and external contractors. He/She also leads business development based on identified needs and opportunities. With this, the role is responsible for project management and operational planning to ensure GeoA’s activities are implemented at a high standard. The Research Manager is also expected to contribute to recruitment and strategic planning.

Job Functions

Project Delivery and Management

The Research Manager oversees and is responsible for implementing all projects with a research or data focus. He/she acts as the lead project manager, is in charge of research design and management, and has a leading role in writing deliveries. The research manager is also responsible for client communications concerning his/her projects and the presentation of final deliverables in front of clients and partners.

Human Resources

  • Leads recruitment and onboarding of new staff if required for project delivery.

Strategy, Representation, and Business Development

The Research Manager will lead the development and writing of the technical proposals and designated complementary materials according to the requirements and templates specified in the solicitation guidelines with inputs and contributions from the donors, GeoA, and its consortium partners. More specifically:

  • Writing technical proposals on a short-term basis.
  • Supervising officers in proposal writing.
  • Selecting new proposals and discriminating on whether bidding is in GeoA’s interest.
  • Represent GeoA with stakeholders, including donors, partners, national and local government, and target communities by demonstrating a professional approach to uphold GeoA’s image and reputation.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with donors and partners to position GeoA as a key organization to deliver technology-based interventions that promote peace-building and good governance.
  • Based on these engagements and relationships, inform GeoA’s business development strategy to identify new funding opportunities to expand GeoA’s project funding in Niger and broader West Africa.
  • Contribute to and review project proposals, both narrative and financial components, to ensure they are informed by specific, identified needs and realities; ensuring that they can be delivered on time and within budget.

Other Tasks

  • Participate in weekly meetings with GeoA Director to review priorities and tasks to ensure effective coordination.
  • Promotes GeoA’s mission and values, including locally based solutions, cultural diversity, gender equality, and carbon neutral strategy.
  • Maintains at all times a high standard of professionalism, efficiency, personal communication, discretion, and independent judgment.
  • Carries out other duties of a temporary character.

General qualifications and Skills

  • Masters or Ph.D. in any relevant field.
  • Five years of professional experience, preferably in West Africa or a developing country.
  • Experience with project management, planning and implementation of activities with social impact.
  • Skills to design and develop project proposals based on country-level identified needs and priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional working ability to speak and write in French and English.
  • Ability to work independently, while proactively raising issues when necessary.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adaptable within a small organization, including taking the initiative and multi-task in a fluid and challenging work environment.
  • Respects cultural differences and ability to work with people from diverse settings
  • Supports and adheres to GeoA’s mission and values, including gender diversity and carbon-neutral strategy.

Research qualifications

  • Background in any quantitative social science is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with R or Stata is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with causal inference is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with survey methods is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with KoBo Toolbox is an advantage.
