We are seeking to appoint a Research Officer, with a focus on Conflict and Fragility, to join ODI’s Politics and Governance (PoGo) programme.

Over the next 5 years, ODI’s PoGo programme will generate critical political economy informed evidence and ideas to advance policy thinking on how to tackle key global challenges, by focussing on three areas of research and advisory work:

i. Critical approaches to conflict/fragility/peacebuilding;

ii. Critical approaches to governance and open societies; and

iii. Digital societies

Against the backdrop COVID and its the multiple impacts and societies rapidly transformed by uneven processes of digitalisation, PoGo will increase its focus on justice, rule of law, human rights, migration as cross-cutting issue areas under the three priority growth areas. Political economy, adaptive, politically smart approaches to thinking and working politically, will continue to be core to PoGo’s approach to understanding how change happens.

Under the supervision of the Director of Programme and Research Fellows, the Research Officer will contribute to designing and delivering innovative, high-quality and policy-relevant research, policy advice and public-affairs initiatives. You will contribute to policy research and advisory projects, engage with policymakers in research and advisory processes, and disseminate results. Specifically, you will support the Director of Programme and senior researchers in ongoing and new work in the conflict/fragility space including the work of the Centre for the Study of Armed Groups, our ongoing work in the Middle East, as well as exploratory work in Central Asia and Western Balkans.

About you

· A degree and post-graduate degree in relevant discipline (eg. conflict/fragility), with some geographical knowledge (eg. Western Balkans/Central Asia/MENA).

· Active knowledge of key international institutions in the sector and beyond.

· Knowledge and experience in business development and fundraising.

· Experience in producing research outputs.

· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate successfully and cultural awareness.

· Excellent analytical and writing skills.

· Good presentation and networking skills.

· Multitasking skills.

· Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Power Point).

· Ability to work in a team.

· Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.

· Ability to work on own initiative.

· Fluency in a language other than English (eg. Arabic, Russian) would be an advantage.
