Job description

Still I Rise, an international NGO, works towards development and the realization of humanitarian projects aiming at providing education and support to refugee children and youth, is looking for a EDUCATION OFFICER to join Still I Rise Management team and lead the roll-out and development of an innovative childhood educational program in Bogotá, Colombia, the first Still I Rise international School in Latin America. The selected profile will be responsible for the evaluation, handling and quality assurance of all educational matters.

The role includes the recruitment and supervision of a team of teachers, and requires a strong desire to get the best out of each of them. The program is a collaborative effort, so excellent communication and a willingness to incorporate the ideas of others into the program is essential. The candidate for the Education Officer should be someone with a strong passion for education and children’s development, a skilled leader, an assertive team player, and geared towards creative problem solving.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the educational development of the program in Bogotá, Colombia, and report to the on-site School Director (PM), remote Chief Schools Officer and remote Education Manager.
  • Attend meetings, submit formal reports and promptly communicate about critical situations and issues through the provided communication channels.
  • Recruit, manage and supervise a team of teachers, holding them to the high standards and modern pedagogy of the Still I Rise educational model
  • Observe classes, keep track of performance and deliverables, provide feedback and assessments to teachers, steer lesson planning and schedule and manage regular team meetings.
  • Assess the training needs of the site’s education team and file requests with the Education Department of pertinent and effective training topics.
  • Interact with local stakeholders on behalf of Still I Rise to ensure our program is well received in the hosting community.
  • Develop and regularly update curricula for all classes in coordination with the Education Department and in line with the educational goals and objectives of the program.
  • Monitor curriculum progress and student attendance, and report patterns, concerns, successes and other findings.
  • Collaborate closely with the Child Safeguarding & Protection Officer to address student concerns, implement behavior plans, and streamline with extracurricular psychosocial activities. All relevant information, policy and behavioral support plans should be shared internally and then be constantly implemented by the local education team in accordance with the code of conduct and child protection and safeguarding policy (i.e. respecting the privacy of beneficiaries).
  • Run frequent needs assessments of our students and collaborate with the coordination team to respond appropriately.
  • Communicate regularly with other local educational actors and update the School Director with contextual reports of developments in education
  • Liaise as necessary with ministry officials and district education representatives, in conjunction with the Program Manager.
  • Hold periodic meetings with the relevant education authorities

  • Average performance rating following a collaborative performance evaluation based upon student feedback, observations and site visits by senior leadership.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness of extracurricular activities and psychosocial support initiatives successfully integrated into the education program.
  • Percentage of positive feedback from community and student caregiver stakeholders
  • Frequency and quality of communication with the local education authorities, and the Ministry of Education
  • Percentage of curricula developed and updated according to the set timelines and educational objectives.
  • Success rate of appropriate responses to students’ diverse needs and challenges.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Full working proficiency in English and Spanish languages, both written and spoken
  • Strong capacity to instill in a teaching a modern, concept-driven, student-centered pedagogy
  • A degree in Education, or any other relevant field, familiarity with IB Curriculum
  • Proven experience as a teacher or school director in a diverse educational setting
  • Proven experience in team management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – outstanding and effective written and verbal communication, assertive, socially aware and geared towards creative problem solving
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with vulnerable children in challenging circumstances, exhibiting exceptional empathy and a commitment to driving positive change within the community.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills – ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • High level of accountability over work – ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
  • Commitment and willingness to work in a challenging environment

  • Excellent IT skills including a capacity to use Google Drive
