Seed Program: Youth Building La Paz-Guatemala / El Salvador At Mennonite Central Committee

This is an overview of work summarizing service possibilities for a group of 4 to 6 people in a program for young single adults and/or married couples without children ( between the ages of 20 and 30 ) who will have their second cycle in Guatemala and El Salvador from August 2023. These participants will serve with the Q’eqchi ’ Mennonite Conference and CCM associates in the Guatemalan highlands. At the same time, the Seed program will address study and discussion topics relevant to its context and work considering the three general approaches that are Reflection, Service and Peacebuilding.

Work description of the Seed in Guatemala / El Salvador program:

This work is part of a two-year global program called Seed that is being implemented and led by the CCM to young adults between the ages of 20 and 30. Requirements:

  1. A flexible attitude towards possible changes and / or unstructured jobs that may occur during your service time.
  2. Have reached the age of 20-30; Single or married couples without children are accepted.
  3. Mastery of Spanish with availability to learn a Mayan language in certain positions. For applicants from the United States, Canada and countries outside the American continent, mastering Spanish is required to learn the Mayan language.
  4. Have a commitment to get involved in the life of an Anabaptist ( church when applying ), and local community.
  5. The ability to understand and adapt to various ecclesial dynamics, processes and theological.
  6. The ability to work and relate in diverse teams with cultural differences, learning models, theological perspectives, and communication styles.
  7. The ability to take initiative and generate new ideas ( be proactive ) for unstructured community processes.
  8. Interés de vivir y trabajar en comunidades Mayas y lugares de difícil acceso, alejados que han sido afectados por la violencia. Por ejemplo: Sin infraestructura como agua potable, energía, buena señal de comunicación y/o transporte.
  9. Una actitud de estudiar y analizar las realidades de la comunidad, las regiones y el país durante el tiempo de servicio, que anime a la reflexión.
  10. Interés por los temas de: (a) Papel de la iglesia en la transformación de la sociedad, (b) desarrollo positivo y organización social de jóvenes, (c) construcción de paz (d) incidencia (e) vida en lo rural vs urbano (f) cultura, tradiciones, costumbres Maya.
  11. Tener nivel de educación universitario y/o experiencia e interés de aprender de procesos comunitarios.
  12. The attitude of perseverance ( does not give up easily ) in the face of different forms of communication, work rhythms, theological perspective and challenges of everyday life ( such as having to wash clothes by hand, walk through dirt streets, etc ).
  13. Have an open mind and a great willingness to actively participate in community and ecclesial processes from an accompanying perspective.
