About the Position
The Senior Accountant’s responsibilities include maintaining the general ledger, preparing financial reports, performing account reconciliations, assisting with audit preparations, and performing other duties as assigned. This person will develop an understanding of the business activities of the international field offices and use this knowledge to identify opportunities to improve processes and enhance operational efficiencies. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Global Finance & Accounting. This position can be based in either one of our head offices, in The Hague, Netherlands, or Washington, D.C.

Key Functions

  • Support the full cycle monthly accounting processes, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, overhead allocations, and reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts;
  • Review monthly payroll and time allocations for all CIVIC offices, including taxes and withholdings.
  • Understand revenue recognition principles and application.
  • Maintain and analyze cash flow forecasts to ensure adequate available funds;
  • Prepare allocations of expenses and ensure methodology is sound;
  • Receive, process, and, when necessary, investigate invoices and process accounts payable;
  • Interact with field office accounting and financial management and consolidate field office financial information;
  • Prepare analysis and meaningful insights of operating expenses.
  • Support the annual audit preparation and Form 990;
  • Work closely with Field Operations accountants to ensure timely and accurate financial transactions;
  • Contributing to the development of new or amended accounting systems, programs, and procedures.
  • Prepare 1099’s and W-2’s for consultants and staff;
  • Communicate (both in verbal and written form) with auditor, vendors, and banking contacts;
  • Assist with developing financial policies and procedures for HQ and field office staff; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years non-profit full-cycle accounting experience including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and financial reports;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required;
  • Knowledge of working with international NGOs (INGO);
  • Ability to perform and prioritize competing projects and tasks with ease and professionalism;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, in English;
  • Must be able to keep CIVIC matters strictly confidential;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent Microsoft Office and accounting software skills;
  • Knowledge of MIP is preferred.

Currently, CIVIC’s offices in the US and the Netherlands are open under strict adherence to all applicable COVID-19 regulations. CIVIC offers a hybrid work model that offers work from home on 3 days per week.
