Senior Associate, Diagnostics At Clinton Health Access Initiative

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries, while strengthening the capabilities of governments and the private sector in those countries to create and sustain high-quality health systems that can succeed without our assistance. For more information, please visit: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

The Global Diagnostics Team (GDT) works to address barriers to access and foster a healthy, competitive marketplace for essential diagnostic testing. The team coordinates global efforts on access to diagnostics, working closely with diagnostics manufacturers, governments, and multilateral organizations to lower prices, increase access to testing, and accelerate the entry and uptake of new innovative products in countries.

Position:

The Covid-19 pandemic has re-ignited donor investments for global health in the Asia – Pacific (APAC) region, and simultaneously brought into sharp focus the unique priorities, opportunities and gaps in the healthcare landscape in the region. While the pandemic has spurred a new wave of investments in the region, it has also simultaneously eroded many of the gains in global health that have been made in the past decade.

CHAI, together with other key donors and partners in the APAC region, is building on the existing momentum for renewed interest in the diagnostics landscape by jointly establishing a regional diagnostics consortium to bring together the relevant donors and partners to align on their strategies, approaches and plans for strengthening diagnostics systems across countries in the region. The regional diagnostics consortium will primarily function as a donor and partner coordinating mechanism, and is expected to perform the following functions, amongst others:

  • Inform donor investments by identifying programmatic interventions needed to address key gaps in diagnostic testing access and quality in the region
  • Inform engagement with manufacturers to ensure a competitive and dynamic marketplace for diagnostics products in the region
  • Ensure coordinated efforts by partners to leverage any synergies and avoid duplication

In parallel, CHAI is also supporting the establishment of a regional laboratory community of practice (LabCoP) to provide a platform to foster south-to-south knowledge exchange amongst laboratories in the region. The key participants and target audience for the LabCoP will be lab directorates and lab staff within Ministries of Health.

The regional diagnostics consortium, as well as the regional laboratory community of practice, will serve complementary roles.

To support both initiatives, CHAI is seeking an entrepreneurial individual with outstanding analytical capabilities, problem-solving skills, and communication abilities. The individual will be expected to work closely with GDT’s Asia-Pacific team in order to drive the following (list below is not exhaustive):

  • Conducting deep-dive analyses and development of preparatory materials to inform donor/partner discussions on gaps and priorities for diagnostics in the region
  • Providing capacity building support to the regional entity establishing a LabCoP as they operationalize their immediate- and mid-term vision
  • Engagement and coordination with a wide range of external stakeholders to ensure buy-in on the overall activities and outputs of both regional initiatives

The role is expected to evolve as both regional initiatives are established and mature, and the responsibilities of this position may evolve accordingly.

Qualifications

  • Proficient with both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analyses, including the ability to prepare and deliver compelling presentations on analyses at varying levels of granularity
  • Ability to think strategically, handle ambiguity, and work in a multicultural environment within a matrixed team
  • Technical proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint
  • Fluent in English

Advantages:

  • Experience working on global health issues (e.g. HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and/or maternal and child health programs)
  • Experience working in management consulting or similar fast-paced results-oriented environments
  • Diagnostics-related experience, either in a programmatic or clinical setting
  • Experience working remotely with a decentralized team
