Senior Editor II at National Endowment for Democracy

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a federally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks a Senior Editor for the Journal of Democracy (JOD), a quarterly publication that addresses the problems and prospects of democracy around the world. The position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

The Senior Editor’s primary role will be to edit Journal of Democracy manuscripts; proofread Journal issues; edit and proofread book manuscripts. Additionally, the Senior Editor will manage the Journal’s website; write and distribute quarterly press releases; and handle various other editorial tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit selected manuscripts for publication in the Journal of Democracy, resulting in fluently written, logically coherent, and factually correct articles that will appeal to the general reader, scholars, specialists, and democratic practitioners.
  • Research background information as necessary to ensure accuracy and accessibility of manuscripts.
  • Consult with manuscript authors to ensure a clear presentation of authored materials.
  • Participate in team proofreading of Journal issues.
  • Edit and proofread manuscripts for volumes in the Journal of Democracy book series.
  • Manage the Journal’s website, including updates to promote new issues, maintenance of article archives, and production of short news items and special web content.
  • Write and distribute press releases announcing new Journal issues.
  • Coordinate with colleagues to develop and implement Journal promotion strategies.
  • Maintain and update press release distribution list.
  • Contribute to the shaping of editorial policies and practices.
  • Offer input and suggestions on the content of upcoming issues.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or humanities; Master’s degree preferred.
    • 8 + years of editorial experience preferred.
    • Experience with Microsoft Word required, knowledge of InDesign, WordPress, and HTML preferred.
  • Other Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of international relations, political science, and current events, particularly issues in the theory and practice of democracy around the world.
    • Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style.
    • Communications or website-management experience a plus.
    • Knowledge of at least one foreign language preferred.
    • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Competencies:
    • A superior command of the English language, excellent writing, and editorial skills.
    • Sound editorial judgment.
    • Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
    • Self-motivated with respect to prioritizing and meeting critical project milestones and deadlines.
    • Able to work effectively with all levels of staff to build good working relationships.
