Job Objective

The Senior Physician is responsible for providing direct medical support to MAG operations, ensuring the availability of high-quality emergency medical care throughout the program. His/her role includes developing training plans, evaluating physicians, and leading training efforts throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, ensuring that locally recruited physicians receive appropriate training and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Operational support

  • Provide medical coverage for MAG weapons and ammunition management activities, including weapons destruction, small arms incineration, ammunition destruction and demining, ensuring compliance with MAG SOPs, International Munitions Technical Guidelines and International Mine Action Standards.
  • Coordinate and supervise physicians across all operational centers to ensure a high level of emergency support and preparedness.
  • Work with PQT to assess and ensure the standard of locally assigned military, police, etc. doctors.
  • Support operational teams with medical advice and guidance, particularly in relation to accident management and evacuation procedures.
  • Assist in developing and implementing emergency medical evacuation/evacuation procedures in collaboration with program management.
  • Submit monthly reports on medical activity to the hierarchical superior and the GMC.

Training and capacity building

  • Assess training needs and develop comprehensive medical training programmes for locally recruited physicians, including refresher courses and accreditation.
  • Provide medical and trauma training to operational staff, ensuring they are equipped to provide assistance in the event of an emergency.
  • Coordinate with the program quality team to assess physician competencies and update training materials.
  • Facilitate regional training sessions for physicians in other programs in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Maintain training records and monitor compliance with training standards.

Medical Equipment and Supplies

  • Ensure medical kits are maintained, stored and in compliance with MAG standards, promptly replacing expired or unusable items.
  • Conduct regular checks of medical equipment, including trauma equipment and vehicles, ensuring their availability and compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Support procurement planning, liaising with logistics team to meet replenishment needs.
  • Maintain inventories and monitor the status of medical supplies throughout the program.

Monitoring and evaluation

  • Conduct regular site visits to assess physician performance, quality of medical support, and adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Use assessment tools, such as patient management assessments, to review physicians’ skills and provide feedback.
  • Report findings to program management, ensuring prompt follow-up on identified issues.

Health, safety and risk management

  • Advise program staff on health and safety issues, including infectious diseases and vaccination requirements.
  • Ensure that CASEVAC plans are up to date and regularly rehearsed by operational teams.
  • Maintain relationships with local healthcare facilities to support staff wellness and emergency needs.
  • Promote hygiene and health standards in operational centres, addressing potential risks.

Person specification

Essential experience

  • Significant experience in emergency medical support, ideally in trauma or remote settings.
  • Experience in medical training and management of medical teams.
  • Experience in pre-hospital treatment and emergency response.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • Qualification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or equivalent.
  • Great capacity for organization, planning and prioritizing tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Experience in the training of traumatologists
  • Ability to write and review SOPs and medical protocols

Desirable experience

  • Experience in humanitarian mine action or in resource-limited environments.
  • Knowledge of the Latin American context and understanding of local health challenges.
  • Knowledge of the Caribbean context and understanding of local health challenges
