Context:
Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a Related Organization of the United Nations (UN), and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
IOM has 40 years of partnership and programming in Indonesia, covering a range of areas including disaster management, refugee and migrant care and protection, counter-trafficking, labor migration, migration health, and immigration & border management programming. In addition to its operational aspects, the IOM Mission works closely with UN partners in integrating the migration agenda within the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and is increasingly providing policy advice and support to Government in recognition of its role as a Champion Country of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
The GCM is the first inter-governmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the UN, covering all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. It presents a significant opportunity to improve the governance of migration, to address the challenges associated with today’s migration, and to strengthen the contribution of migrants and migration to sustainable development.
The GCM is framed in a way consistent with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in which Member States committed to cooperate internationally to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration. The GCM is designed to:
