Burundi is one of the 20 most vulnerable countries in the world facing the effects of climate change. These have a devastating impact on vulnerable populations and the majority of humanitarian needs in the country are caused by recurrent natural disasters linked in particular to climate change. The years 2020 and 2021 were particularly difficult for the populations living on the coast of Lake Tanganyika (Makamba and Rumonge provinces) and the Rusizi river in the Gatumba area, near Bujumbura, due to the rise of waters that flooded entire neighborhoods. In other parts of the country, too little rainfall is problematic. The four provinces that are likely to be the most affected by insufficient rainfall and to experience production below-average agriculturalists alone receive a little more than half of repatriated Burundians (28,151 to Kirundo, 31,464 in Ruyigi, 14,162 in Cankuzo and 12,346 in Rutana out of a total of 169,098 returnees since 2017).
