The USAID-funded Learning, Acting and Building for Rehabilitation in Health Systems (ReLAB-HS) is designed to support development of health systems that are responsive to the escalating challenge of addressing the growing needs for rehabilitation within populations. It seeks to co-design and implement innovative, comprehensive, cost-effective interventions that strengthen health systems for provision of rehabilitation including assistive technology. ReLAB-HS will focus on integrating rehabilitation and assistive technology services across all levels of care within health systems. The ReLAB-HS consortium comprises of five international partners with expertise in health systems, implementation science, and delivery innovations.

Consultancy Description

Momentum Wheels for Humanity is seeking is seeking a qualified consultant for the USAID-funded Learning, Acting and Building for Rehabilitation in Health Systems (ReLAB-HS) activity in Uganda to develop and conduct a two-day Assistive Product (AP) maintenance and repair training for local artisans in Gulu, Lira, Iganga, and Mayuge, in Uganda. The rapid Assistive Technology Assessment (rATA) in Uganda has identified a significant reliance on self-made assistive products in Uganda, underscoring the necessity for training local artisans in proper maintenance and repair techniques to prevent secondary injuries. This training initiative aims to improve the availability of high-quality AP maintenance and repair services as close to the community as possible. The AP Maintenance and Repairs Consultant will be responsible for providing technical support to Momentum Wheels for Humanity on the design and implementation of this training.

Detailed Responsibilities

Consultant shall assume the following specific responsibilities for the length of the consultancy:

  • Collaborate with ReLAB-HS to develop a comprehensive curriculum for a two-day AT maintenance and repair training program.
  • Conduct the two-day training for 16 local artisans (four per NoC), emphasizing the characteristics of high-quality and appropriate assistive products.
  • Integrate systematic engagement strategies into the training, emphasizing the importance of artisans in the networks of care as part of the service delivery model.
  • Provide practical demonstrations and hands-on sessions to ensure participants acquire practical skills in AT maintenance and repair.
  • Foster a collaborative learning environment, encouraging knowledge sharing and peer-to-peer learning among the participants.
  • Develop training materials and resources for future use and reference.
  • Collect feedback from participants for continuous improvement and adaptation of training content.

Qualifications:

  • Training in orthopedic technology or similar field
  • At least 5 years of experience in orthopedic technology
  • Proven expertise in assistive products maintenance and repair, with a focus on locally made AT products.
  • Experience in designing and conducting training programs for artisans or healthcare professionals, preferably in the context of AT services.
  • Familiarity with the healthcare landscape in Uganda and an understanding of the challenges faced.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.
  • Language requirements: Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Power Point, Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Previous experience in similar projects or capacity-building initiatives is desirable
