Who we are:

Human Rights Watch (HRW) investigates and reports on human rights abuses happening in all corners of the world. We are roughly 500 people of 70-plus nationalities who work to protect the most at risk, from vulnerable minorities and civilians in wartime, to refugees and children in need. The Multimedia Division is where we craft our visual messaging and deliver it to our audiences in order to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents.

The opportunity:

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Video Producer and Editor/Development Partner Manager who is creative, solutions- focused and hardworking, to build the profile of our partnerships with institutional funders in Europe including the Novamedia/Postcode Lottery Group.

The role includes producing and editing social media content and proactively identifying communication opportunities. The Video Producer and Editor/ Development Partner Manager will be the focal point and lead for interactions with key external constituents ensuring that the communications activities enable the partnerships to meet their goals. The successful candidate will work closely with HRW’s Media and Development Departments to promote a culture of collaboration and innovation with our partners.

This fixed-term, full-time position for one year will ideally be based in one of HRW’s major offices in Europe, such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, London, or Stockholm and will report to the Multimedia Director based in New York.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES*:*

1. Develop and execute communications strategies and activities that maximize the impact of our work on the issues which are at the core of our funding partnerships;

2. Produce and edit videos that showcase the partnerships and promote HRW’s work in a straightforward and compelling way to appeal to a broad audience;

3. Monitor and identify opportunities within Human Rights Watch to deliver communications activity, such as news releases, videos, photos, campaigns, social media posts, and other content of relevance to engage a broad audiences on human rights issues;

4. Adapt multimedia products to different languages, to widen reach of HRW content and also build the profile of our partnerships;

5. Develop, research, storyboard, produce, and edit video and animated multimedia products that will further HRW’s objectives;

6. Make complex ideas simple and engaging through effective writing skills and visually compelling video content, ensuring HRW’s editorial standards and adhere to the highest journalistic practices;

7. Collaborate with HRW Media and Development departments to develop multimedia communications plans;

8. Manage and prioritize multiple projects with careful attention to all details both in creative production and management of the work;

9. Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Media Department;

10. Actively seek to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values and initiatives into multimedia, including collaborating with global partners and consultants;

11. Manage content distribution, logging, archiving footage, and other tasks related to production;

12. Attend donor communications related events and meetings; and

13. Carry out other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS*:*

Education: A bachelor’s and or/ an advanced degree in Communications, Journalism, Multimedia, Marketing, Visual Arts or similar related field is highly desirable. Candidates with equivalent training/experience and a passion for journalism and/or human rights work are also encouraged to apply.

Experience: A minimum three (3) years of experience working in broadcast journalism, video production, communications, marketing, or a similar field is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English are required; proficiency in another language, such as Dutch, German, or Swedish, is preferred. Ability to work effectively with multiple languages is required.

2. Experience producing sizzle reels and promo videos is highly desirable. Solid track record in conceptualising, creating and posting content on social media that resonates with broad audiences is required.

3. Track record in developing and co-ordinating communications activity involving multiple stakeholders is required.

4. Excellent storytelling editing skills are required.

5. Creativity and the ability to identify and turn around a shareable story quickly is required.

6. Demonstrate traits of tact, discretion, sound editorial judgment and the ability to function in a confidential capacity is required.

7. Knowledge of leading graphic, audio, and video tools, including Adobe Suite and Premiere Pro, and working knowledge of Mac OS are required; Proficiency in Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects are desirable.

8. Ability to demonstrate continual learning in the field of communications is required.

9. Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail is required.

10. Excellent project management skills: from definition and design to delivery and evaluation is required. Ability to multi-task multiple stories while also producing long-term projects, work under pressure, and thrive in a deadline-driven environment is required.

11. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external media partners are required.

12. Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur, producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.

13. Excellent communication skills, self-motivated, creative problem-solver, highly organized, and demonstrates the ability to work well as a member of a team are required.
