IRI is creating student and employee partnerships that facilitate growth and development of IRI’s future leadership. The intern will support the work of IRI’s Eurasia Division.

This position will start in January 2022 for no more than sixteen (16) weeks and may not be extended. This is a paid position, at $15.20 per hour.

Position Requirements:

  • Current student in or recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate program in Political Science, International Affairs,
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Detail-oriented individual with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively, complete tasks with minimal oversight, and communicate clearly and consistently in a virtual work environment.
  • A background and/or demonstrated interest in political science, international affairs, international development studies, or related fields
  • Preferred candidates will have knowledge of and interest in Eurasia
  • Curiosity and proactive interest in IRI’s work and in contributing to various tasks regarding international development, Eurasian affairs, and emerging democratic movements
  • Candidates encouraged to note any relevant background in independent journalism or civic activism work

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Eurasia division in coordinating and implementing democracy assistance programs across Eurasia. Activities include but are not limited to quarterly reporting, proposal development, preparing data collection tools and presentations for public opinion research, and developing external communications products.
  • Monitor regional news to build an understanding of political developments in Eurasia and inform IRI activities. In addition to building personal knowledge, the information will inform public opinion research objectives and inform political context sections in quarterly reports.
  • Produce and edit written materials for internal and external audiences (e.g. briefing books, blog post(s), news summaries) where relevant
  • Conduct background desk research to support the development of IRI programs and activities by identifying industry best practices, effective programming models, and other implementers’ activities.
  • Attend relevant meetings and seminars on Eurasian affairs (in virtual or in-person format, location permitting) and prepare written notes for Eurasia team members when requested
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Duties may include merging file management systems between DC program staff and field staff, prepare presentations for internal meetings, contribute to the development and processing of public opinion research projects, etc.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn about and interact with various stages of international development, including business development, implementation of projects, monitoring, evaluation and learning or activities and reporting.
  • Develop greater knowledge of the cultures and political systems of Eurasia and the role of voters, political parties, civil society, and international organizations in democratic systems.
