As Volunteer Coordinator, you will be responsible for various organizational, administrative and logistical tasks to support our missions on Lesvos. You will be the point of contact for our volunteers and ensure a pleasant atmosphere in our volunteer house.
WHERE WILL YOU WORK?
Boat Refugee Foundation provides medical and psychosocial (emergency) aid and stands up for the rights of people seeking refuge. We take action where systems become inhumane and compassion is lost. Since 2015, we have been working in various locations at the borders of Europe. There our teams, which largely rely on volunteers, provide medical and psychosocial support.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
As Volunteer Coordinator, you are responsible for all practical and logistical matters surrounding volunteers and our volunteer house on Lesvos. The Volunteer Coordinator is the contact person and supervisor of the Interpreting Team and the Support Crew. In addition, you are the point of contact for the medical and MHPSS volunteers. You ensure that volunteers are aware of the context in which they work (through training) and ensure compliance with the Code of Conduct & Safeguarding.
As Volunteer Coordinator, you will be part of the coordinator team on Lesvos. In addition to your own role, this team consists of an Area Manager, Medical Coordinator, MHPSS Coordinator and the Financial & Logistics Officer. In addition, you will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator in the Netherlands.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- You manage the interpreting team (many of our interpreters live in the camp themselves), including monthly meetings and recruitment and selection of new interpreters. You supervise them on a personal level and have regular individual evaluation moments with them;
- You pick up administrative tasks for the interpreting team, such as making a schedule, arranging badges and certificates;
- You are the liaison between the interpreting team and the other volunteers and ensure that cooperation between the teams runs smoothly;
- You supervise the support crew volunteers and are their first point of contact for questions. You will train these volunteers and organize meetings and evaluation moments;
- You arrange all kinds of practical and logistical matters for the volunteers. You answer their questions and provide them with the necessary information;
- You’re responsible for the reception, introduction and general briefing of new volunteers;
- Together with the other coordinators, you create Code of Conduct & Safeguarding awareness sessions, signaling and addressing when necessary;
- You ensure a pleasant atmosphere in the volunteer houses and keep a close eye on the wellbeing of the volunteers;
- You keep track of the planning of (new) volunteers and ensure continuous staffing in cooperation with the Volunteer Coordinator Netherlands;
- Organizing a teambuilding activity once a month and two sports activities per month for all volunteers.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
As a person, you are a real organizer. You work in a structured way and have a good overview. You are also stress-resistant and can cope well with ad hoc situations, which often arise on Lesvos. You are enthusiastic, sociable and a real motivator. In addition, as a person you are committed, empathetic and culturally sensitive.
FURTHERMORE, YOU MEET THE PROFILE BELOW:
- You have a relevant degree or relevant work experience;
- You have at least two years of experience in management and supervision of volunteers and/or leading a multicultural team;
- Experience in the Greek context is an advantage;
- You have experience abroad, preferably in the humanitarian aid sector;
- You speak and write excellent English. Speaking Dutch, Greek, Farsi, Somali or Arabic is an advantage;
- You have experience speaking in front of groups (in English);
- You are clear in your communication and do not shy away from a difficult conversation;
- You are decisive and can work well independently;
- You have strong administrative skills and can work well with Excel, Word, Gmail and Google Drive;
- You are in possession of driving license B;
- You have the nationality of one of the countries belonging to the European Union or are entitled to work and live in Europe. This is due to guidelines from international labor, tax and social law.
WHAT DO WE OFFER YOU?
A temporary contract for nine months. An extension after this period is possible, with a maximum commitment of 12 months in total.
A salary appropriate to the character and objective of our organization, based on a 40-hour working week. Your basic salary will be € 1.745,- gross per month. Because you work in Greece, Greek labour law applies. We therefore follow Greek regulations when it comes to salary payments (14 payments a year), social security and taxes. We cooperate with an HR service provider based in Athens for this purpose.
In addition to your salary, you receive an allowance for cost of living. Of course, we will support you in finding a suitable place to stay. Also a part of your travel expenses for your flight to and from Lesvos will be reimbursed. A (shared) car is available to you on the island (fuel costs are reimbursed).
