Weapons Analyst Consultant At Amnesty International

JOB TITLE: Weapons Analyst Consultant

Are you an experienced open source investigator focused on weapons used in conflicts?

Could you put your skills to use to help Amnesty monitor and respond to human rights violations in emerging conflict and crisis situations?

JOB PURPOSE:

The consultant will be at the forefront of investigations into cases of human rights abuses and war crimes in conflicts and crisis worldwide. By providing expertise in ordnance identification, post-blast analysis, weapons trafficking and diversion, and less-lethal munitions, the Evidence Lab’s Weapons Analyst will work as part of a team of open source researchers to prove cases and bring perpetrators to justice.

The position is situated in the Evidence Lab – a multidisciplinary team that uses cutting-edge digital investigation tools to document human rights violations remotely. Part of Amnesty’s Crisis Response Programme, the Evidence Lab brings together open source and visual investigators, remote sensing experts, data scientists, developers and other experts to conduct investigations and tell the stories of people most affected by conflict.

The post requires occasional international travel.

ABOUT YOU:

An open source investigations expert with specialised knowledge of munitions and their employment, as well as proven experience supporting fact-finding on human rights violations, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to be the Evidence Lab’s leader in weapons analysis. A natural communicator, you’ll collaborate with our research, media and campaigns teams across the globe – helping to ensure our researchers use the best information in their human rights investigations.

You have the confidence and authority to represent Amnesty in the media, academic and civil society networks – ensuring findings are shared in the most engaging way possible, and supporting our advocacy and campaigns to end human rights abuses.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct open source research, both independently and as part of larger collaborative projects.
  • Identify model, country and date of manufacture, and other relevant attributes of weapons and ordnance from digital content, including open source content and private material provided by researchers and local sources.
  • Do preliminary remote post-blast analysis based upon digital content and testimonial evidence.
  • Explore new and innovative strategies/tools for real-time monitoring and verification of information gathered through open sources.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of two years’ professional experience in specialized weapons identification work within open source investigations, verification, and publication, ideally in the context of human rights documentation.
  • Proficiency in weapons employment, explosive effects, and general military and law enforcement doctrine
  • Experience in training and public speaking.
  • Familiarity with most social media platforms, their limitations and their potential applications, and expertise in open-source tools platforms such as Google Earth Pro.
  • An awareness of the risk of vicarious traumatization, how to recognize it and mitigate it.
