ABOUT THE ROLE:

Amnesty International is looking for an experienced researcher to join its Middle East & North Africa (MENA) Regional Office, to shape and develop our human rights work on Yemen.

As a research-based campaigning organization, investigating and documenting human rights issues is fundamental to our advocacy and lobbying work. The MENA Regional Office requires researchers to take the lead in initiating human rights research and action by providing regional and thematic expertise, excellent research and report-writing skills and sound political judgement. A campaign-oriented approach to your work is essential.

You will conduct research activities, monitor, investigate and analyse political, legal and social developments and human rights conditions, give authoritative advice on these areas and write reports and human rights action materials. You will be an authoritative voice on Yemen representing Amnesty International in coalition initiatives, and lead on advocacy efforts and opportunities to advocate for recommendations before domestic and international interlocutors and stakeholders. You will be prepared to conduct field missions in Yemen following Amnesty International’s risk assessment policies and other institutional requirements. The role will be based in one of our offices, Beirut, Tunis, or London.

ABOUT YOU:

With experience of working on human rights issues, preferably in the framework of international humanitarian law and/or gender, you will have first-hand in-depth knowledge and experience of Yemen, with a strong network and familiarity with lead advocates, strategists and members of civil society involved in Yemen. You will have an understanding and awareness of economic and social rights as well as civil and political rights. Your background is in activism, gender, law or journalism, preferably with field experience in medium to high-risk locations. You will have the experience to search and identify issues relevant to the organization’s mandate. You will need proven research and communication skills, impartial political judgement, coupled with strong strategic thought. Fluency in English and Arabic, including excellent spoken, reading and writing skills, is essential.
