**Project: “**INNOVA – Innovation, quality and sustainability for the leather sector in Niger” (INNOVA – Innovation, quality and sustainability for the leather sector in Niger)
Contracting Authority: Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), Niamey Headquarters, Niger
Brief description of the project:
The project “INNOVA – Innovation, Quality and Sustainability for the Leather Industry in Niger” supports the development and modernization of the leather and leather goods industry, identified as strategic by the Government of Niger, with the aim of increasing the income of workers and their families. In the Tahoua Region, paying particular attention to young people and women. The proposal is the result of a collaboration between CISP, Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli, an Italian NGO with extensive experience in development and emergency projects in Niger; PISIE – International Polytechnic for Industrial and Economic Development, a leading Italian NGO in vocational training and technical assistance for the transfer of technology and know-how in the leather and leather sector in emerging countries; AIPCP – Interprofessional Association of Leather and Skins of Niger, born from a strong need for coordination, which represents all categories of actors in the leather industry: butchers, collectors, tanners and artisans. The INNOVA project addresses the main critical issues identified through two areas of intervention: 1. Improving the quality of tanned hides, by intervening on the mechanization of processes, the environmental and economic sustainability of production and on training and technical assistance at the level of slaughter (skinning) and vegetable tanning, in the semi-modern slaughterhouses and tanneries of Tahoua and Tamaské. 2. Improving artisanal production and expanding markets, by intervening on the training of artisans from 4 cooperatives in Tahoua and Tamaské, with the collaboration of international experts and the Centre de Métier de Cuir e l’Art de Niamey, on the strengthening of artisanal cooperatives, and on improving collaborations between the different actors in the sector: operators at the three levels of the production process organized into cooperatives, traders, public institutions, buyers of finished products in the country and abroad.
