The Opportunity
Save the Children is building a fresh approach to campaigning – our work to engage publics to shift political conditions for changes in policy and practice for children. Our new campaign model centres on child campaigning alongside supporting partnerships and movements, strong public engagement, and storytelling to generate political momentum for change. In 2022, we embark on a new 5-year global advocacy and campaign strategy to tackle climate change and economic inequality as connected crises that threaten children’s rights and futures.
As a member of Save the Children’s Advocacy, Campaigns, Communications and Media team for the Asia region, the Regional Campaign and Advocacy Officer is a critical role to help us campaign with children and youth with a focus on addressing these intersecting threats while promoting gender and civic space across a range of countries in Asia.
This role will lead and drive critical regional campaign projects, short term mobilization activities, and long term contributions to common objectives. It will help ensure child campaigning as a central and leading element of our current global campaign by ensuring that we are helping to connect and mobilize our network of networks across the region.
This role will work with multiple country offices and partners to help align the overall campaign and advocacy ambition, keep regional players and country teams updated in terms of new development, and coordinate routine monitoring, evaluation, and learning exercises.
Key Responsibilities
Advocacy
- Periodic mapping of opportunities across the region on themes such as climate, gender, inequality and civic space
- Support capacity of partners to engage with and influence policy-making processes such as Voluntary National Reviews
- Engage with regional partners to advance Save the Children’s and children’s advocacy agenda in the regional influencing landscape
- Develop a clear understanding of Save the Children positions on relevant topics
Campaigns
Drive the implementation of national and regional campaign strategy and plans:
- Identify campaigning opportunities to meet our advocacy objectives
- Design, plan and deliver Save the Children**’**s campaign agenda via popular mobilisation events, high level advocacy events, online presence, and media collaboration.
- Look for opportunities to place children’s voices in publications, events and influencing activities
- Link Save the Children global and regional campaigns where possible and relevant. Provide content and contributions to global and country campaigns where possible.
- Mobilize and collaborate with children’s networks such as Red Alert and other multi-national networks
- Organise events with influential figures and children to keep issues high on the regional climate change agenda
- Organise routine learning events to nurture cross-learning between Save the Children and partner colleagues
- In collaboration with the MEAL team and project staff, establish monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for campaigns and ensure that implementation and impact are effectively monitored and evaluated
Coordination and alignment
- Alignment of objectives and work plans across a range of partners in a range of countries
- Regular updates and preparation of dashboards of different matrices on the agenda that includes – climate, gender, and civil society space
- Represent Save the Children at appropriate regional meetings
- Ensure coordination of advocacy messages and activities between the field offices, Country Office and the regional and international levels.
Requirements:
- Experience and interest in the development of impactful campaigns, built from the experience of using a range of campaigning and movement building tactics.
- A demonstrable understanding of and interest in the role of children and youth in advocacy and campaigns, especially in relation to the climate and environment crisis.
- At least 3 years proven experience of mobilising public audiencesto affect policy change across a range of campaigning and organising techniques and tactics.
- First class high level project management skills– ability to hold and delivery complex campaign projects independently, under pressure in a global / international context
- Natural, collaborative style and ability– ability to initiate, convene and inspire in a complex networked organisation across a range of cultures
- Understanding of the external campaigning landscape, including in global political contexts.
- First class communication skills: the ability to communicate complex information in oral and written English in a clear, simple way to wider staff, partners and campaigns audiences.
- Experience of developing and delivering campaign trainings and capacity building programmesdirectly as well as with / through colleagues
- Proactive in bringing out challenges with a ‘solution focused’ mind set
