SolidarMed Zimbabwe is a local Private Voluntary organisation registered with the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe. SolidarMed’s programmatic focus is on implementation, gaining strong technical expertise in HIV, infectious diseases, mother-child health, non-communicable diseases, and capacity strengthening of partner organisations including through digital health. Key partners are the main health care providers in the programme areas, which are the national, provincial and district representatives of the Ministry of Health and Child Care, local leaders, and the executive boards of the health institutions.

SolidarMed seeks to recruit a highly motivated Chief of Party (COP) for an anticipated USAID-funded five-year maternal, new-born, child health (MNCH) programme in selected provinces and districts of Zimbabwe. The project is anticipated to focus on strengthening the systems and capacities of the government of Zimbabwe and its partners to accelerate the reduction of maternal and new-born mortality in the country. Final confirmation of the position is contingent upon a successful funding award approval by USAID.

Job description

The COP will work closely with the Country Director to:

  • Provide expert technical, financial, and administrative leadership of the anticipated USAID MNCH programme.
  • Provide hands-on strategic guidance and management of project staff and partner organisations.
  • Serve as the principal liaison with USAID as well as responsible for building strong relationships with the Government of Zimbabwe, implementing partners and other key stakeholders.
  • Develop project strategies, work plans, budgets, training materials and reports grounded in the programme’s strategic objectives.
  • Work with the monitoring and evaluation team to design and implement a database to track data/results related to MNCH to inform project implementation and track quality assurance of the project.
  • Ensure all project tasks are implemented effectively to a high quality and that deliverables are submitted on time, within budget, and in compliance with applicable United States Government (USG) regulations and SolidarMed’s policies.
  • Actively participate in relevant technical advisory/working groups and professional forums to represent SolidarMed and the project.

Required qualifications and person specifications.

  • A Master’s degree or higher in public health or another related field.
  • A minimum of seven years of professional experience as a COP or similar high-level position successfully managing large, complex programmes, preferably in Zimbabwe.
  • Experience working with major donors, in particular demonstration of experience with USAID systems or managing USG cooperative agreements/contracts.
  • Proven record of knowledge and technical expertise in MNCH including strategic planning, programme designing, monitoring, evaluation, policy, and research. Advanced knowledge of the Zimbabwe governments MNCH policies and programmes preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with senior level government officials, donors, private for-profit and non-profit sectors as well as academia, preferably in Zimbabwe.
  • Strong leadership qualities and interpersonal skills with demonstrated experience managing large and diverse teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as presentation skills in English.
