Deputy Country Director At Relief International

We are currently recruiting a Deputy Country Director to join our Yemen team.

This is a country-based position in Aden, Yemen, with up to 50% travel within the country.

About the Opportunity

The Deputy Country Director will provide strategic, programmatic and operational leadership across Relief International’s portfolio in Yemen, ensuring humanitarian and development programmes are delivered safely, effectively and in compliance with donor and organizational standards. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the role will drive programme quality, strategic planning, fundraising and innovation while working closely with the Country Director, programme teams, technical advisors and external stakeholders.

Your Responsibilities

This role includes the following responsibilities.

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the country programme, supporting the development and implementation of Yemen’s country strategy and strengthening cross-functional collaboration.
  • Oversee programme implementation and budget management, ensuring high-quality, timely and compliant delivery of projects in line with donor requirements and organizational standards.
  • Lead programme development and fundraising efforts, supporting the design of evidence-based, innovative and impactful proposals and interventions.
  • Strengthen MEAL, programme quality and risk management systems to ensure accountability, learning, compliance and continuous improvement across the portfolio.
  • Manage and develop programme teams while representing Relief International with donors, partners and coordination forums. This role includes regular travel within Yemen (approximately 50%).

About You

You will bring the following experience and skills.

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field, or a bachelor’s degree with equivalent professional experience.
  • Substantial proven experience providing senior leadership and programme oversight within humanitarian and/or development contexts.
  • Strong experience managing institutional donor-funded programmes, including grants from donors such as USG, ECHO, EU, FCDO and UN agencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in programme development, project management, strategic planning, coordination and operational oversight.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, external representation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven experience leading, managing and developing diverse teams in complex environments.
  • Fluency in English is essential.
  • Experience working in conflict-affected settings, previous experience in Yemen or the Middle East, strategic planning and change management expertise, and Arabic language skills are desirable.
