Global University Self-help Canada (EUMC) is a Canadian non-profit organization whose mission is to improve’ education, economic opportunities and’autonomization of youth. We work with a diverse network of’students, volunteers,’institutions, governments and’companies. Together, we are promoting solutions that focus on young people to overcome inequality and’exclusion.
The overall objective of the new project will be to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to develop local and regional capacities to use evidence and collaborate with women and women marginalised groups to prioritise NBSs relevant at local level for’ adaptation to climate change. It will adopt a systemic approach to support climate adaptation’ through interventions that plan, plan, pilot and scale NATURE-based solutions (NBS) for climate adaptation that contribute to the enhancement of biodiversity and gender equality. The’ general hypothesis is that the restoration and reforestation of degraded forests, both on the agricultural territory and’outside, is,will be critical in helping women and their communities adapt to the challenges of climate change and will be critical to the protection and restoration of biodiversity in this critical global hotspot.
The project will operate in close collaboration with CECI, a member of the consortium, as well as with IUCN, CIFOR-ICRAF and the University of Guelph. Key local stakeholders include local and national government agencies, regional institutions, the private sector, women’s groups and environmental organizations. This initiative builds on the decades of experience of EUMC and CECI in supporting vulnerable populations and draws on the experience of a variety of local and international partners who bring a strong vision NbS climatic, are fully immersed in their respective ecosystems and whose work can be accelerated by this project. This project is a timely intervention to ensure that Ghana,Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea continue to effectively tackle climate adaptation while integrating nature-based solutions and a strong gender perspective.
General tasks
The Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning Officer (SERA) of the NBS project in West Africa will be responsible for monitoring and evaluation activities in Ghana, Guinea and the’Ivoire Coast. Under the direction of the project’s senior SERA regional advisor, its roles and responsibilities include :
- Implement and contribute to the regular updating of the SERA plan, in accordance with the results-based management principles (RAB) of’World Affairs Canada, as well as’s organizational requirements ;
- Carry out all tasks related to the SERA (such as planning, coordination of monitoring and data collection activities, staff training, etc.) in accordance with the SERA project plan ;
- Contribute to capacity building of partners where necessary and appropriate, to promote their active participation in all phases of the development and implementation of the SERA plan (since the design of the plan itself and its tools, and, up to’s data collection exercises ; from data analysis, to dissemination and’use of results) ;
- Support the’EUMC and CECI teams, as well as implementation partners in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Guinea, to plan and execute the activities related to SERA ;
- Deploy and contribute to the regular updating of all tools WILL BE linked to key indicators with the aim of’ informing program activities and reporting to the donor, and, and to support the evidence-based continuous learning’ and adaptive management in the process ;
- Provide high-quality technical support on the planning, development and implementation of the SERA plan to project staff and partners ; and
- Contribute to regular communication and coordination with regard to the collection and exchange of’ information related to the SERA with project staff and key stakeholders in Ghana, in Guinea and Cote d’’Ivoire, as well as’ with the global teams of’EUMC and CECI.
Design of’tools SERA, deployment and quality assurance
- Contribute to the development and periodic review of tools for routine monitoring of activities and collection of programme data ;
- Identify the training needs of staff working on the project and recommend actions to improve SERA capacity ;
- Ensure that SERA activities are carried out by partners in accordance with the SERA Project Plan ;
- Ensure that the data collected is reliable, accurate and complete – to the extent possible in the context of the project ; and
- Apply a’ continuous improvement approach to all data collection processes.
Data collection and management
- Ensure that SERA activities are completed in a timely manner to contribute to high-quality evidence-based learning, planning and reporting ;
- Identify monitoring needs in line with programme implementation and collect data that effectively inform ongoing progress ;
- Ensure that precise and complete SERA files and databases are created, maintained and updated to ensure data security ;
- Support the collection of qualitative data for the purposes of documentation and dissemination of lessons learned, case studies and change stories; and
- Support the planning, logistics and coordination of EUMC and CECI staff and project consultants or technical assistance visits, as required.
Communication, Knowledge management and Reporting
- Ensure that SERA data is shared in a timely and regular manner with project colleagues to feed the reporting cycles, mainly the annual narrative report, in an efficient and timely manner, in accordance with organizational and donor standards ;
- Ensure that regular updates on SERA project processes are communicated and shared with project staff in all partner organisations ;
- Maintain and regularly update the database and lead the compilation of high-quality, evidence-based donor reports ;
- Respond to requests for information from’EUMC and CECI staff, project partners and senior management of’EUMC and CECI ; and
- In collaboration with partners and teams from other projects, the, contribute to the conversion of NBS project data into knowledge products important to project stakeholders through different channels (blogs,’ guidance notes, newsletters, social networks, etc.).
- Undertake any other tasks assigned by the senior regional adviser SERA of the NBS project.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in social sciences, statistics or a related field.
- At least five years of experience in’ development and implementation of monitoring and’assessment systems and plans ;
- Experience working with international development partners, international non-governmental organizations and donors, ideally with Global Affairs Canada (formerly known as DFATD or CIDA);
- Experience in capturing and translating project evidence into useful knowledge products (using different forms of communication channels) to support project communication objectives will be an asset ;
- Experience with the concepts and principles of RBM is required ;
- Experience in the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data is preferable ;
- Experience working with ethnically diverse communities and with projects implementing gender mainstreaming strategies ;
- Experience with open source data collection tools and ( data management software preferably ) ;
- Understanding of climate adaptation and / or agroforestry programs ( preferably );
- Experience with GIS tools ( QGIS, ArcGIS ) ( preferably );
- Experience in supporting multi-country and multilingual programs ( preferably ) ;
- Skills demonstrated in high-level written and verbal communication in English and French.
