1. Background and Context

CPCD is a global firm specializing in monitoring, evaluation, research, assessments, and consultancy services. Established in 2018, CPCD aims to contribute to sustainable and long-lasting development for clients, partners, and communities through evidence-based and data-driven solutions.

CPCD provides high-quality assessments, evaluations, capacity building, Third-Party Monitoring (TPM), research, and training services through experienced teams with extensive expertise in complex and conflict-affected environments.

As part of its ongoing research, monitoring, and evaluation assignments in Syria, CPCD is seeking experienced and qualified Field Researchers to support quantitative and qualitative data collection activities in Damascus and Rural Damascus.

2. Duty Stations

The assignment will be implemented across selected locations in Damascus and Rural Damascus.

Applicants are not required to reside within a specific project location. Candidates living in Damascus, Rural Damascus, or nearby accessible areas are encouraged to apply, provided they are able to travel regularly and reliably to assigned field locations. Candidates residing in other Syrian governorates are also encouraged to apply and will be considered for potential future opportunities.

Selection will be based on the candidate’s relevant experience, availability, accessibility to field locations, and ability to undertake fieldwork, rather than solely on place of residence.

3. Overall Objective of the Assignment

The Field Researcher will support CPCD in collecting high-quality, reliable, accurate, and verifiable quantitative and qualitative data from targeted individuals, households, communities, institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.

The researcher will be expected to conduct fieldwork professionally while strictly adhering to CPCD’s research methodology, ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, and data quality procedures.

4. Specific Roles and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Field Team Leader and the M&E/Research Team, the Field Researcher will be responsible for the following:

Pre-Fieldwork Preparation

  • Participate in all mandatory training and orientation sessions.
  • Become fully familiar with questionnaires, interview guides, sampling procedures, consent forms, and data collection protocols.
  • Participate in pilot testing of research tools and provide practical feedback.
  • Understand and comply with ethical requirements, including informed consent, confidentiality, PSEA, safeguarding, and Do No Harm principles.
  • Become familiar with digital data collection platforms such as Kobo Toolbox, Kobo Collect, or ODK.

Quantitative and Qualitative Data Collection

  • Conduct field visits to assigned locations according to the approved fieldwork plan.
  • Identify and approach selected respondents professionally and respectfully.
  • Conduct structured and semi-structured interviews accurately and objectively.
  • Administer household and individual questionnaires using electronic data collection devices.
  • Conduct interviews with community members, service providers, local stakeholders, and other relevant groups.
  • Ask questions neutrally and avoid influencing respondents’ answers.
  • Use appropriate probing techniques to obtain clear and complete responses.
  • Accurately record all responses and observations.
  • Respect the privacy, dignity, and confidentiality of all participants.

Data Quality and Documentation

  • Review completed questionnaires daily for completeness, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Ensure that all required fields and supporting information are properly recorded.
  • Submit collected data according to the agreed daily schedule.
  • Immediately communicate any inconsistencies, field challenges, or data quality concerns to the Field Team Leader.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed interviews and field activities.
  • Ensure that data collection devices and research documents are properly safeguarded.

Coordination and Reporting

  • Coordinate closely with the Field Team Leader and CPCD project team.
  • Participate in daily briefings and debriefings.
  • Provide regular updates on fieldwork progress.
  • Report respondent refusals, accessibility challenges, security incidents, or other relevant field issues.

Ethics, Safeguarding, and Confidentiality

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of respondent information.
  • Never disclose personal or sensitive information outside the authorized project team.
  • Follow CPCD’s Code of Conduct, safeguarding requirements, and ethical research standards.
  • Demonstrate zero tolerance for Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), harassment, discrimination, or misconduct.
  • Immediately report any safeguarding or protection concerns according to established procedures.

5. Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of an Institute Degree, Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent qualification in Social Sciences, Economics, Statistics, Development Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Business Administration, Education, or another relevant field.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in field research, assessments, monitoring, evaluation, surveys, or humanitarian/development data collection.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative interviews.
  • Fluency in Arabic is mandatory.
  • Good understanding of the social and cultural context of Damascus and Rural Damascus.
  • Ability to use smartphones or tablets for digital data collection.
  • Experience with Kobo Toolbox, Kobo Collect, ODK, or similar platforms is strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with different population groups.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
  • Ability to follow research protocols and instructions accurately.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly within Damascus and Rural Damascus.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and reliability.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous experience with CPCD, research firms, consultancy companies, NGOs, INGOs, or UN-funded projects.
  • Previous experience conducting KIIs, FGDs, household surveys, or community-level assessments.
  • Experience working with vulnerable or conflict-affected communities.
  • Experience collecting data across sectors such as:
    • Food Security and Livelihoods
    • WASH
    • Protection
    • Education
    • Health
    • Nutrition
    • Shelter
    • Early Recovery
  • Basic understanding of sampling methodologies.
  • Previous experience with Third-Party Monitoring or external evaluations is an advantage.

6. Working Conditions

  • This is a field-based assignment.
  • Researchers will be expected to travel regularly within assigned locations in Damascus and Rural Damascus.
  • Fieldwork may involve extended working hours depending on project requirements.
  • Researchers may work in areas with challenging field conditions.
  • Assignments may vary in duration depending on CPCD’s project requirements.
