Doctor, Neonatologist At International Medical Corps

To provide specialized care for newborns, including premature and critically ill neonates, in a resource-constrained humanitarian setting, and to strengthen neonatal care practices within the facility.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Care

  • Provide advanced care for neonates, including preterm and low birth weight infants
  • Manage neonatal emergencies (e.g., birth asphyxia, sepsis, respiratory distress)
  • Oversee neonatal resuscitation and stabilization at birth
  • Support inpatient neonatal care (NICU or special care baby unit as available)
  • Guide feeding practices, including breastfeeding support where feasible

Emergency & Humanitarian Response

  • Ensure readiness for neonatal complications during mass casualty or surge events
  • Adapt neonatal care protocols to limited equipment and supplies
  • Support management of neonatal complications related to maternal trauma or stress

Quality of Care

  • Implement and monitor neonatal care standards and protocols
  • Strengthen infection prevention and control in neonatal units
  • Participate in perinatal and neonatal mortality reviews

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, midwives, and nurses
  • Support integrated maternal and newborn care
  • Coordinate with pharmacy and supply teams for essential neonatal commodities

Training & Capacity Building

  • Train staff on neonatal resuscitation (e.g., Helping Babies Breathe or equivalent)
  • Mentor nurses and midwives in essential newborn care
  • Build capacity in kangaroo mother care (KMC) and low-resource neonatal interventions

Documentation & Reporting

  • Ensure accurate neonatal records and reporting
  • Contribute to surveillance of neonatal outcomes and trends

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent)
  • Completed residency in Pediatrics with sub-specialization in Neonatology
  • Valid medical license
  • Minimum 3–5 years of clinical experience post-residency
  • Experience in emergency, critical care, or acute medicine strongly preferred
  • Exposure to trauma and critically ill patients
  • Strong clinical judgment in resource-limited settings
  • Ability to work rotational shifts, including nights and weekends
  • Prior humanitarian or low-resource setting experience highly desirable
  • Previous work experience with IMC/NGO highly desirable
  • Ability to work under pressure and in insecure environments
  • Excellent teamwork and communication
  • Cultural sensitivity and adaptability
  • Fluency in English and a relevant local language required
  • Experience working in a high-workload and high-stress environment
  • Flexibility, sound decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet).
