Background

The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is a private, not-for-profit international development agency and part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). Established in 1967, AKF works to improve the quality of life for marginalized communities, with a strong focus on women and girls. AKF Kenya implements programs in Agriculture, Civil Society, Climate Resilience, Early Childhood Development, Education, Health and Nutrition, and Work and Enterprise. The STRIDES project is a seven-year initiative (2025–2032) funded by Global Affairs Canada and Aga Khan Foundation Canada. It aims to enhance the equal enjoyment of SRHR for women and adolescent girls in underserved areas of Kilifi County, Kenya, and Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. In Kilifi, the project targets 137,335 beneficiaries across five sub-counties: Ganze, Kilifi North, Malindi, Rabai, and Kaloleni.

Purpose of the assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to recruit Enumerators to support the STRIDES baseline study in Kilifi County. The study will collect both quantitative and qualitative data to establish benchmarks for key outcome indicators. Enumerators will be deployed across the five target sub-counties (Ganze, Kilifi North, Malindi, Rabai, and Kaloleni). The baseline will focus on women and adolescent girls (ages 10–49), men and boys (ages 15+), and key community stakeholders. Data collection will include household surveys, focus group discussions (FGDs), and key informant interviews (KIIs).

A total of 30 Enumerators, 26 engaged for Quantative data collection, 4 focused on qualitative data.

Key responsibilities

  1. Enumerators will be expected to:
  2. Attend all training sessions and participate in piloting activities to ensure readiness for ethical and accurate data collection.
  3. Administer household surveys using mobile tools and support qualitative data collection through FGDs and KIIs under supervision.
  4. Obtain informed consent, maintain confidentiality, and strictly adhere to AKF’s safeguarding and ethical research standards.
  5. Develop and maintain a clear daily workplan prior to data collection, outlining the specific villages to be visited to ensure coverage of assigned locations per day.
  6. Submit complete and accurate data daily, maintain fieldwork logs, and promptly report any challenges encountered.
  7. Use and manage project equipment responsibly, ensuring proper handling and return upon completion of fieldwork.Ethical and safeguarding standards

Enumerators must:

  1. Sign AKF’s Safeguarding Statement of Commitment
  2. Abide by AKF’s Safeguarding Manual, AKF Code of conduct and ethical research standards.
  3. Ensure participant protection, confidentiality, and informed consent
  4. Report any safeguarding concerns immediately

Required Qualifications

  1. Minimum diploma in social sciences, public health, statistics, or related field
  2. Prior experience in field data collection, especially on gender, health, or SRHR topics in Kilifi County.
  3. Familiarity with digital data collection tools (ODK, KoboToolbox)
  4. Fluency in English and Kiswahili; knowledge of local dialects will be an advantage.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
  6. Demonstrated commitment to ethical research and safeguarding principles

Deliverables

  1. Completed and verified survey forms (digital)
  2. Daily fieldwork logs and summaries
  3. Feedback on tool usability and field challenges
  4. Participation in debrief and final review session

Reporting Structure

Enumerators will report to AKF Kenya Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning Coordinator and will collaborate with the Local Consultant.
