Description of the organization
Founded by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in 1986, Epicentre conducts field epidemiology, training, and medical research activities in support of MSF’s humanitarian objectives. We have three research centers in France, Niger, and Uganda, and remote epidemiologists. Our areas of expertise cover infectious diseases (malaria, TB, HIV, cholera, Ebola, etc.), neglected diseases (leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, etc.), and chronic diseases that are on the rise in African countries, such as diabetes and cancer.
Job Description
Epicentre is seeking an epidemiologist to work in the Department of Intervention Epidemiology and Training (DEIF). The department’s activities include operational research projects and support for MSF operations. The epidemiologist will participate in the development of observational studies, their planning, operational implementation, and analysis of results. This research may include statistical analyses of surveillance data, population-based surveys (mortality, nutrition, seroprevalence), and cohort studies (non-exhaustive list).
In addition, the epidemiologist will play a leading role in scientific publications related to the implemented research and in translating research findings into direct operational recommendations for MSF interventions.
What you bring with you
Technical and operational skills: You will design and implement research studies to answer operational research questions related to MSF interventions.
You will be responsible for developing and reviewing study protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). You will provide front-line support to the field team in implementing the SOPs.
You will also work in the field, providing operational support for studies. This involves actively supporting the operational team and conducting field visits based on activities and needs, including support for the organization and monitoring of activities or recruitment carried out on site.
In addition, you will be a driving force in data management, monitoring and controlling data quality, through database management, supervision and support for the encoding team.
You will conduct analyses of the projects for which you are responsible and write reports and scientific publications. Analysis techniques may include, but are not limited to, statistical models such as regression, survival analysis, and time-domain data analysis.
You will also interact directly with MSF operational teams to translate research findings into operational recommendations.
While carrying out your projects, you may be required to provide support to other epidemiologists on the team.
Interpersonal skills and teamwork: You will be able to facilitate and organize study-related boards, meetings, and committees. We will value your excellent skills in preparing and facilitating remote meetings (from advice and support to interviews for field recruitment) and your ability to integrate into a multidisciplinary, multinational, highly motivated, and competent team.
A strong interest in collective activities and in the development of the organization: you have an appetite for deepening and sharing the principles of action regarding research carried out with vulnerable populations.
Training skills: depending on needs, you can be a facilitator in training courses organized by Epicentre for MSF staff.
