Open Cultural Center (OCC) is a non-profit organisation (NGO) based in Spain and Greece that works towards the inclusion of refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers by offering activities to both host-country nationals and third-country nationals.
The organization was established in 2016 in response to the European refugee crisis and now manages cultural centers and residential programs for migrants and refugees in Spain and Greece. We are a small international team united by a commitment to breaking down barriers to social inclusion for migrants and refugees.
Our main projects in Greece include:
- Early childhood education center.
- Socio-educational activities with children and youth.
- Education activities for adults.
- Women Space.
- Transport and mobility projects to connect refugee camps to urban areas.
- European Union projects that foster social innovation and exchange of best practices
For a period of 10 months, starting in , we are offering a Bike Space and Logistics volunteering position within OCC Greece, focused on supporting on the implementation of bike space project and logistics in Polykastro.
Main tasks
- Administration of the bike rental system;
- Managing the space and the maintenance of the bikes and the tools;
- Check and control the bike system; register new members; assure that bikes are returned and stored in good condition;
- Provide training and workshops for new renters and OCC volunteers.
- Assist with logistics across OCC spaces, as needed.
- Οrganises and carries out sports demonstrations with adults and minors.
- Οrganises sports activities for minors on park days during the evening classes
Requirements
- Bachelor’s in Physical Education or Diploma of any type of Technician/Mechanic will be considered an asset
- Speak English fluently
- Organisational skills; problem solving skills
- Previous experience with bike repair and maintenance is an asset.
- Passionate about sports and outdoor activities
- Previous experience working with refugees and other migrants is an asset.
- Knowledge of at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Kurdish (Kurmanji, Sorani, Badini), Farsi, or Dari is an asset.
- Awareness and ability to work in a diverse, delicate, and difficult context with empathy and open-mindedness
Eligibility
To participate in the ESC Volunteering program you are required to meet the following criteria:
- Being between 18 -30 years old
- Being an EU resident + Partner countries (Neighbouring the EU)
- Being available for 12 months
- No Prior ESC Participation
What do we offer?
Our volunteering program is funded by the European Commission through the European Solidarity Corps program. This means that volunteering provides:
- Travel costs coverage: Up to the limits established in the Erasmus+ Guide distance calculator from the volunteer’s region of residency to our center
- Free Accommodation (shared room): Provided in Polykastro. The flat is fully equipped (kitchen, bathrooms, washing machine, wifi, etc
- Monthly allowance: 330 euros per month
- Insurance: Henner
- Free Language courses: Online
