ALIMA PRESENTATION

HELPING – INNOVATING – TOGETHER: Since its creation in 2009, ALIMA has treated more than 13 million patients in 15 countries and currently operates in 12 African countries and Haiti. In 2022, we developed 62 humanitarian medical response projects to meet the needs of populations affected by conflict, epidemics, and extreme poverty. All of these projects are carried out in support of national health authorities through nearly 511 health facilities. We work in partnership, particularly with local NGOs, whenever possible to ensure that our patients benefit from expertise, whether at the national level or internationally. Furthermore, to improve the humanitarian response, we conduct operational and clinical research projects, particularly to combat malnutrition and viral hemorrhagic fevers.

THE ALIMA TEAM: More than 2,000 people currently work for ALIMA. The field teams, working closest to patients, receive support from the coordination teams, generally based in the capital cities of the countries where they operate. These teams are supported by the four desk teams and the emergency and openings team based at the operational headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. The teams in Paris and New York actively work on fundraising and representing ALIMA. The rest of the ALIMA network includes individuals and partner teams working for other organizations such as the medical NGOs BEFEN, ALERTE Santé, SOS Médecins/KEOOGO, and AMCP; the research organizations PACCI and INSERM; the Universities of Bordeaux and Copenhagen; the NGO Solidarités International; and many others.

OUR PROJECT THEMES: Malnutrition, Sexual and reproductive health including gender-based violence, Primary and secondary health, Pediatrics, Malaria, Epidemics (Hemorrhagic fevers, Meningitis, Cholera, Measles, Dengue, Covid-19).

ALIMA promotes and defends fundamental human rights principles. ALIMA has a zero-tolerance policy towards those guilty of gender-based and sexual violence, as well as towards inaction in the face of alleged or proven acts of violence. The protection of those benefiting from and impacted by our work is our top priority in everything we do. Everyone collaborating with ALIMA commits to:

INI Project — Nutrition-Vaccination Integration

The Nutrition-Vaccination Integration (INI) project, to be implemented in two countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger, over a period of three years, aims to simultaneously address two of the leading causes of infant mortality in sub-Saharan Africa: malnutrition and infectious diseases. These two problems are mutually reinforcing: malnutrition increases vulnerability to infections, while infectious diseases worsen children’s nutritional status, creating a vicious cycle that jeopardizes their survival and development.

To break this cycle, the INI approach integrates the distribution of small-quantity preventive lipid nutritional supplements (SQ-LNS) into routine immunization services for children aged 6 to 23 months. This strategy simultaneously strengthens child nutrition, improves immunization coverage, and reduces mortality through a single delivery platform that is more accessible to families.

SQ-LNS are ready-to-use nutritional supplements with widely demonstrated efficacy. They help reduce infant mortality, anemia, wasting, stunting, and developmental delays. Their use is recommended by the World Health Organization in food-insecure contexts.

The INI approach also draws on encouraging results from trials conducted in Africa. The NutriVax study in Nigeria showed that combining SQ-LNS with routine immunization significantly increased measles vaccination coverage and reduced the number of children who received no vaccine (zero-dose). Promising results are also being observed in ongoing trials in Chad and Niger.

In this context, the Gates Foundation is supporting this new project to scale up the Integrated Nutrition Initiative (INI) strategy in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger, in order to assess the impact of this integrated approach on immunization coverage and children’s health. The project assists governments in implementing integrated delivery models, tailored to national priorities, to sustainably strengthen nutrition and immunization programs and improve the survival and development of young children.

Overall objective: to reduce infant mortality and morbidity by integrating nutrition and vaccination activities to improve vaccination coverage and nutritional status of children aged 6 to 23 months.

Specific objectives:

  • The joint administration of the SQ-LNS strategy and routine vaccinations in order to achieve a dual impact on health: a reduction in malnutrition and an increase in vaccination coverage.
  • To establish a scalable operational and financial model that can be replicated in other regions.
  • Strengthen government ownership and co-financing to enable expansion without support from external actors.
  • Develop a roadmap for the local or regional production of SQ-LNS.

This program aims to reach approximately 175,000 children in Niger and 185,000 children in the DRC over three years (360,000 children in total).

INI PROJECT MANAGER — DAKAR HEADQUARTERS

JOB LOCATION

Based in Dakar, Senegal, with regular visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger (2 to 3 times a year).

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINKS

  • He/she is under the managerial responsibility of the Head of Desk 1, and under the functional responsibility of the Nutrition Referent.
  • He/she works with all members of desk 1 and collaborates with headquarters services.

MISSION AND MAIN ACTIVITIES

Under the supervision of the desk 1 manager and the Nutrition referent, the INI project manager, based in Dakar, is responsible for the overall implementation of the project at the operational, financial and scientific levels.

  • He/she is the representative of the INI project to the donor and to national, regional and international partners.
  • He/she supervises the project coordination team, which includes 3 people (an administrative and financial officer, a monitoring and evaluation officer, a logistics supervisor), as well as the field implementation teams (1 Project Coordinator in the 2 countries of intervention ) in connection with the heads of mission.
  • He/she is responsible for the overall management of the project. He/she coordinates the development of action plans at the project level in both countries, specifying in particular the responsibilities for each member of the project teams and for each project partner.
  • He/She is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the project, including activities in the countries. In particular, he/she will ensure that the objectives are met within the deadlines contractually defined with the donor. He/She will also be responsible for establishing mechanisms to monitor and ensure the quality of deliverables. He/She will be responsible for the project’s budget management and will ensure regular operational and budgetary adjustments based on needs and results, particularly the evaluation of interventions.
  • He/she coordinates the development and implementation of the strategy for documenting and disseminating the results and lessons learned of the project, and more broadly, the advocacy strategy at the global and national level and with the international donors identified to finance the scaling up and transition of this project.
  • He/she coordinates with the Nutrition referent, organizes and conducts coordination meetings, and ensures the sharing of information and lessons learned from the project.
  • He/she ensures the contractualization between ALIMA and the implementing partners (partners, health authorities, etc.).
  • He/she is the focal point at the Dakar headquarters.

Experiences & Skills

  • Demonstrated experience as a project coordinator of at least 5 years in low-income countries.
  • Demonstrated experience in the field of nutrition, and more specifically with SQ-LNS programs and/or treatment with ready-to-use therapeutic foods.
  • Higher education (Master 2 level) in management, public health, political science, development, business school, or equivalent degree.
  • Similar experience coordinating a scaling-up project or a complex public health project.
  • Experience in implementing projects with health authorities (technical support for nutrition and vaccination activities).
  • Skills and knowledge of the procedures of an international landlord.
  • Required qualities
    • Ability to work in a team, including in multicultural contexts.

    • Rigour and respect for deadlines.
    • Analytical and synthesis skills.
    • Organizational skills, autonomy.
  • LANGUAGES
    • Fluent English and French are essential.

Conditions

  • Contract duration: contract under Senegalese law, fixed-term contract of 18 months renewable, with a probationary period of 3 months renewable once.

  • Salary: according to the salary scale in effect at the Dakar Headquarters.
