Intern – Generalist/Employment Law (M/F) At Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian medical association created in 1971, provides medical assistance to populations whose lives are threatened: mainly in cases of armed conflict, but also epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters or exclusion from care.

The mission of the Generalist/Labor Law intern is to provide support to humanitarian operations across the various jurisdictions where MSF activities are implemented, specifically associated with the HR/Duty of Care and Incidents Unit.

Mission

The MSF Legal Department provides general/private legal advice and support to Doctors Without Borders teams both in the field and at headquarters.

The intern will join the Intersection Legal Department, within the HR / Duty of Care and Incidents Unit, which deals with issues relating to employees deployed in the field as well as incidents that may affect them.

These issues cover individual or collective situations, primarily in labor law and liability law, but may also fall under criminal law. Working closely with operational teams, the Unit analyzes the legal risks associated with the situations encountered and supports the management of various incidents: disciplinary procedures, accidents, abuses, security incidents, and medical incidents.

Main activities

The intern’s main activities will be in support of MSF’s humanitarian operations, across the various jurisdictions where our activities are implemented:

  • Analysis and preparation of files in response to requests from operational sites;
  • Drafting emails, notes, tools and guidelines for operational staff in the field;
  • Active participation in the Unit’s projects;
  • Support for the management of human resources disputes in our countries of operation (risk analysis, negotiations, pre-litigation);
  • Support for the management of litigation cases in the field (social, criminal, civil and tort liability);
  • Various legal research under different legal systems.

The intern’s tasks involve working on legislation from numerous jurisdictions, taking into account local specificities, human issues and the humanitarian principles that guide MSF’s actions.

This internship offers valuable experience in the legal profession, through concrete and diverse issues at the intersection of law, human resources, and humanitarian operations. It will allow the intern to develop their skills in legal analysis, risk management, and supporting operational teams in demanding and particularly enriching contexts.
