Company Description

SNV is an international development organisation that applies practical know-how to make a lasting difference in the lives of people living in poverty. SNV is a not-for-profit organisation with annual revenues of over €130 million, and 1,300 team members working in approximately 25 countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America.

We apply our know-how to deliver results at scale worldwide, through our focused expertise in agriculture, energy, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), long-term local presence and partnerships. Our projects directly benefit millions of people. At the same time, we focus on contributing to systems change, which helps many more people harness opportunities and work their way out of poverty, well beyond the scope of projects.

Job Description

Overview and Objectives of the assignment

SNV’s current Strategic Plan 2019-2022 ends at the end of next year. SNV seeks to develop a new strategy (as opposed to a strategic plan) which will guide our work into 2030, coinciding with the culmination of the Sustainable Development Goals. For this purpose, SNV seeks the services of a consultancy provider to support with the development of the organisation’s new strategy.

The strategy needs to be framed within the external context we operate. Today’s global complexity and the evolving realities we work in will be key to how we will position ourselves in the coming years. At the same time, the strategy process is also an element in strengthening internal cohesion within SNV. However, while the strategy development process is as important as the output, we want to avoid engaging in overly cumbersome, inward-focused processes at a time when our work and the impacts that we’re contributing to externally have rarely been more necessary.

Our objective is not to change the core elements of who we are as part of the strategy development process, but rather to better align our mission, vision, values, and culture with who we are, ensure greater relevance to the contexts, needs and opportunities where we work, and that we are fit for purpose. SNV is currently going through an internal process to reinvigorate and reaffirm our mission and vision. The new strategy should build on this. Other work that is already underway is to broaden the scope of our work in the sectors we currently are active in to achieve greater impact. Knowing these developments, we seek to steer more on who we reach, where we work, strategic partnerships, and the outcomes of our work. This also includes for instance how we talk about impact, systems change, and scaling the programmatic work we do.

We are looking for professional support in providing effective steering and guidance for this process in the coming year. Support from a consultancy provider, external to SNV, will help us to build alignment, bringing us closer together as one SNV. The new strategy is to serve as a compass for SNV in the coming years.

We specifically seek a small dynamic team (e.g., 2-3 consultants or a consultancy firm) who understand the development world (preferably with some familiarity and knowledge of SNV and the internal and external context we work in), who can shape and steer a good process together with a matrixed team representing country, sector, and global teams from across SNV. On SNV’s side, the development of the new strategy will be supported by the Global Head of Corporate Affairs, the Strategy Advisor, and a cross-matrix advisory team (TBD), with significant input from members of SNV’s management team, and periodic check-ins and overall oversight from the CEO.

Timeline

SNV intends to hire the consultancy provider for a fixed number of days between January 10, 2022, and September 31, 2022. The new strategy should be submitted for approval to SNV’s Managing Board in September 2022, prior to Supervisory Board final approval ahead of the start of SNV’s internal planning process for 2023 (which runs October-December each year).

The deliverables are presented in 3 phases which would roughly run over the following months:

· Phase 1: Exploration, process, and external framing (January – March)

· Phase 2: Consultations and inputs (April – May/June)

· Phase 3: Strategy production and preparation for follow-up (June/July – September)
