Communications and Advocacy Coordinator At Samos Volunteers

Samos Volunteers is an independent group of volunteers providing hygiene, non-formal education, clothing distribution and psycho-social support to people in the refugee and migrant communities on Samos.

The Communications and Advocacy Coordinator leads on the Samos Volunteers advocacy strategy that aims to continue raising awareness about the situation on Samos and work with other NGOs to collectively design and implement targeted advocacy to governmental and EU levels. The C&A Coordinator is responsible for creating content and managing the social media platforms, Samos Volunteers website and external communications with journalists, academics and researchers.

This is an important role that advocates for fair and dignified migration policy as well as structural support for displaced communities.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Advocacy and Campaigning
  • Plan, design and deliver advocacy campaigns that reflect the realities and experiences of those in the refugee and migrant communities living on Samos.
  • Act as the spokesperson for Samos Volunteers, liaising with journalists, researchers and politicians, to share situational updates from the island and closely collaborate with individuals from the refugee and migrant communities to amplify their perspectives.
  • Collaborate with local and national organisations to jointly organise advocacy and campaign material (e.g. draft open letters, press releases and policy briefings).
  • Represent Samos Volunteers within national and European advocacy networks, as well as maintain and develop positive relationships with organisations and solidarity movements.
  1. Communication
  • Create content and manage the social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn).
  • Update the Samos Volunteers website.
  • Coordinate the Samos Volunteers monthly newsletter.
  1. Fundraising Support
  • Support the Fundraising Manager in setting up fundraising campaigns and events.
  • Oversee the fundraising of the organisation in collaboration with the Project Manager.
  1. Other responsibilities
  • Assist in the day-to-day running of the Samos Volunteers community centres, Alpha Centre and Alpha Land, and operational decisions.

Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • Minimum time commitment of 6 months, fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • Experience of working with displaced communities (preferably in Greece) and a strong understanding of challenges and needs of people in refugee and migrant communities.
  • Experience of designing advocacy materials and campaigns.
  • Experience in managing social media channels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to interact with various actors and experience in articulating complex ideas in an appropriate way.
  • Commitment and willingness to work in a challenging and ever-changing environment.
  • An understanding of the complexity and challenges of humanitarian work, including concepts such as saviorism and privilege.

Desired:

  • Graphic design/photography skills and experience using Mailchimp and Squarespace.
  • Fluency in Greek/Arabic/French.
  • Experience of working in the grassroots NGO sector.
  • Lived experience of displacement or forced migration.

Further information

The Coordinator will have their reasonable living expenses refunded by the organisation. This will be 400 euros per month. Private room in a shared house is included.
