Context Analysis Adviser At Norwegian Refugee Council

We are recruiting an experienced analyst/ researcher, specialized in Sudan’s political and conflict context to advise its strategic humanitarian response and advocacy.

This position supports NRC Sudan Advocacy and leadership by providing analysis on the conflicts and political crisis in Sudan. You will track conflict dynamics, as well as geo-political, socio-economic development and analyse their impact on the broader humanitarian context. You will also technically support the roll out of advocacy research projects in area of operation.

Responsibilities

This position is part of the Advocacy department and will strengthen the department ambition to become a data driven analysis and policy hub, in the domain of the Protection of Civilians and forced displacement. You will perform the following functions:

  • Contribute to NRC Advocacy publications and positioning by providing focused analysis and context updates based on advocacy priorities (protection of civilians, forced displacement)
  • Produce bi-weekly briefing document, mapping (crisis mapping, stakeholder mapping) and quarterly reports for internal or external audience
  • Conduct regular field research and interview with communities, to provide first-hand analysis on key advocacy priorities (protection of civilians, forced displacement). Field work is likely to accompany or closely follow NRC emergency response teams
  • Establish a context monitoring system to track key conflict dynamics and trends, and provide anticipatory analysis relevant to NRC’s Advocacy priorities and strategic direction
  • Strengthen advocacy research by overseeing the technical aspects of research (methodology, including mixed quantitative & approaches and data analysis tools/databases), and by supporting the analysis. This includes a longitudinal research on Durable Solutions in Darfur.
  • Foster relationships and information sharing with non-humanitarian actors including academia, human rights organizations, and civil society groups.

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate research training, ideally at doctoral level, in international law, International Relations, Conflict Studies, social sciences or related field.
  • 3-5 year’s experience working on conflict or political analysis, or on humanitarian advocacy.
  • Experience with research and the production of written materials – such as reports, briefing notes, position papers, talking points, etc.
  • Experience from working in complex and volatile contexts, including in Sudan

To excel in this role, you require

  • Knowledge of Sudan, and sound understanding of its regional context.
  • Previous experience in Darfur and two other country areas will be an advantage
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative research
  • Experience with humanitarian operations, protection, humanitarian space and access, or conflict-sensitive approaches (is desirable)
