Cultural Mediator At International Organization for Migration

Context:

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Director of the Coordination Office for the Mediterranean, Chief of Mission in Italy and Malta, and the direct supervision of the Integration Specialist and Coordinator (PM), the incumbent will be responsible for supporting the implementation of project “IOM Support to the Italian Programme for Assistance and Health Monitoring at sea of rescued migrants” PASSIM PHASE 3 which will be implemented in Catania, Crotone, Lampedusa and Roccella Jonica.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Provide general linguistic support and interpretation services to PASSIM 3 health teams (doctors and nurses) involved in rescue at sea operations on the Italian Coast Guard patrol vessels in Sicily and Calabria;
  2. Support the health teams identifying vulnerable groups among the migrants rescued by the PASSIM 3 interventions;
  3. Remain available to participate in rescue operations at sea on the Italian Coast Guard patrol vessels, as required by the PASSIM 3 team;
  4. Participate in all the training sessions envisaged by the PASSIM 3 project (i.e. health assessment, psychological first aid, gender-based violence, human trafficking, intercultural communication, stress management and burn-out prevention);
  5. Support the PM in reporting on any issue related to migrants rescued to be provided within the PASSIM 3;
  6. Support with any relevant administrative and procurement procedure to be implemented locally in Sicily and Calabria (Lampedusa and Catania, Crotone and Roccella Jonica);
  7. Any other related services, as requested.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

High School diploma.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience in the field of migrants’ assistance.
  • At least 3 years of working experience in the field of cultural mediation and migrants’ health, with a particular focus on migratory vulnerability and integration to health services.
  • Previous experience with international organizations, NGOs and/or EU Agencies would be an asset.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of the Italian Immigration Act with specific reference to the international protection holders status.
  • Knowledge of the International Health Regulation at arrivals via sea in Italy.
  • Driving license is required.

Languages:

  • Fluency in Italian and mother tongue in at least one of the following languages:
    English, French, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Wolof, Pular, Mandinka, Bambara, Fula, Hausa, Twi, Djoula, Turkish, Pharsi, Pashto.
  • Knowledge of Tigrinya, Somali and Amharic will be considered as an asset.
