GIZ has been operating in Syria since 1976. It has thus established valuable contacts in civil society and garnered experience that is now crucial for supporting the country. It is currently implementing several projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Foreign Office, with co-financing from the European Union and other donors. Throughout this year, the portfolio is planned to be expanded by additional new projects.

On behalf of the Federal Foreign Office, on the one hand, the inclusive political transition in Syria is accompanied, in close cooperation with Denmark, and on the other hand, the stabilisation of the country is supported through inclusive conflict resolution and peacebuilding measures. At the national level, this includes cooperation with various Syrian ministries, governmental authorities and nation-wide commissions. Stabilisation measures at the local level focus on resolving and preventing conflicts, improving living conditions and access to basic services, and strengthening local communities in cooperation with partner organisations, volunteers and grassroots initiatives.
