Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian medical association created in 1971, provides medical assistance to populations whose lives are threatened: mainly in cases of armed conflict, but also epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters or exclusion from care.

MSF’s Intersectional Legal Department is composed of legal advisors and managers under a single Directorate that advises the various MSF operational centers in a harmonized and collaborative manner. It is organized into thematic units (1. International Humanitarian Law, 2. Medico-Legal, 3. Human Resources & Duty of Care, 4. Legal and Administrative Framework, 5. Governance, 6. Innovation, Medical Research and Data Protection).
The legal department is seeking a: Legal Intern – International Humanitarian Law, National and/or International Criminal Law, Forensic Medicine
The MSF Legal Department provides legal advice and support to Doctors Without Borders teams both in the field and at headquarters.
Within the legal department you will be attached to thematic areas 1 and 2.
Main activities
In support of humanitarian operations, and across the various jurisdictions where MSF activities are implemented:
- Various legal research in international humanitarian law as well as under different national legislations (medico-legal, sexual and reproductive health, patients’ rights and medical ethics, criminal law, state of emergency…);
- Drafting notes, tools and guidelines;
- Facilitate the organisation of meetings and their follow-up (minutes, follow-up of action points…) within Units 1 and 2, as well as in interaction with the other units of the department;
- Archiving of confidential medico-legal files.
Desired profile
Education/Experience:
- PPI EFB internship / Master 2 degree holder / Sciences Po Law School / Other equivalent profile.
- International humanitarian law, national and/or international criminal law, or health law.
- Experience in NGOs, criminal litigation, law firms or legal departments covering the topics of Units 1 or 2 would be an asset.
Skills and abilities:
- Editorial rigor,
- Ability to problematize and synthesize;
- Interest in MSF’s humanitarian and associative activities;
- Open-mindedness,
- Adaptability and teamwork.
LANGUAGES :
- Very good level of English and French, especially in writing (50% of the work in English).
Status and conditions
- 6-month internship, with mandatory internship agreement.
- Based in the 19th arrondissement of Paris.
- The amount of the stipend is between €4.35 and €7.70 gross per hour depending on the level of education.
- One meal voucher is allocated per day worked, with a face value of €12 (60% covered by MSF).
- 2 paid days off per month.
- Coverage of 50% of public transport subscription (weekly, monthly or annual) or bicycle mileage allowance (€0.25 per km, limited to €450 per year).
