MdM in Yemen
Yemen remains one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, after more than a decade of conflict, economic decline, climate shocks, and political instability. In 2026, over two-thirds of the population require humanitarian assistance, including 9.4 million people identified as most in need of life-saving support.
The health system is under extreme strain, with only 59.3% of health facilities fully operational and 19.3 million people requiring healthcare services, including more than 660,000 pregnant women in need of urgent care. Cholera continues to pose a major public health challenge, adding pressure to an already weakened system.
The operational environment remains highly volatile, marked by security incidents, service disruptions, funding cuts, and economic challenges that regularly affect humanitarian activities.
Médecins du Monde operates across northern and southern Yemen, with a coordination office in Sana’a and field offices in Aden and Marib. Its interventions focus on two strategic priorities:
- Supporting 29 health facilities to deliver primary healthcare services, including outpatient care, vaccination, nutrition, and reproductive health.
- Providing mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) through healthcare facilities and community-based networks trained in identification, referral, and awareness-raising activities.
About the role
As MHPSS coordinator you will be in charge of overseeing all MdM’s MHPSS programming for the Yemen mission. You will contribute to proposal writing and development of new projects or concepts as per MdM’s mandate. You will also take part in the country strategy elaboration for the MHPSS sector, led by the general coordinator.
Who you’ll work with
Under the supervision of the general coordinator and in close collaboration with the mental health advisor, you will provide technical leadership and functional management to the MHPSS Officers based in Sana’a, Aden and Marib.
Working closely with other MdM departments, local NGO partners and focal points within the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MoPHP), you will support the implementation, coordination and monitoring of activities aimed at integrating Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) components across MdM programmes.
What you’ll do
👉 MHPSS programme development and management
- Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of the country MHPSS strategy and programme
- Ensure MHPSS activities are integrated into MdM-supported primary health care services and delivered in line with gender-sensitive and empowerment approaches
- Guarantee compliance with MdM and international MHPSS standards, and contribute to the development and review of training materials, SOPs, guidelines and reports in collaboration with the MHPSS Advisor
- Strengthen MHPSS referral pathways with partners and service providers, and support the mapping of needs, assessments and programme design to address identified gaps
- Ensure services remain culturally appropriate, responsive to changing contexts and emerging needs, and delivered according to quality standards
- Monitor programme implementation, budget utilisation and community-based MHPSS interventions
👉 Capacity building and technical support
- Participate in the recruitment, induction and onboarding of MHPSS staff, ensuring adequate orientation to MdM’s MHPSS framework and tools
- Provide technical supervision and day-to-day support to MHPSS teams, including field-based officers, while contributing to performance management and staff development
- Develop and deliver capacity-building initiatives, including Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes on PFA, PM+ and other relevant MHPSS approaches
- Support the rollout of trainings for national staff and promote the integration of MHPSS standards across MdM teams
👉 Coordination and representation
- Foster close collaboration with health, protection and support teams to ensure integrated programme implementation
- Coordinate with local authorities, NGO partners, UN agencies and other stakeholders involved in MHPSS interventions within MdM areas of operation
- Represent MdM in relevant MHPSS coordination forums and technical working groups, contributing to information sharing, referral mechanisms, advocacy efforts and the promotion of good practices
👉 Monitoring, reporting and evaluation
- Oversee monitoring, evaluation and learning processes for MHPSS activities, including the development of tools, data collection and analysis
- Ensure regular review of programme performance and recommend corrective actions when required
- Act as the focal point for MHPSS reporting and contribute to donor reports, proposal development and fundraising efforts
REQUIREMENTS
You are the right match if you…
- Hold a Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Public Health or a related field, complemented by training in MHPSS and project management
- Have proven experience managing MHPSS programmes in humanitarian settings, including programme design, quality assurance, monitoring and donor reporting
- Are confident integrating MHPSS into primary health care services and have a solid understanding of IASC and WHO MHPSS frameworks and interventions
- Can lead and support multidisciplinary teams, providing technical guidance, building capacities and fostering collaboration across locations and departments
- Are comfortable working with donors and budgets, and have experience developing proposals, reports and funding opportunities
- Excel at coordination and representation, building constructive relationships with authorities, partners, UN agencies and other stakeholders
- Combine strategic thinking with strong organisational skills, enabling you to adapt programmes to evolving humanitarian contexts and changing needs
- Communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing; knowledge of Arabic and experience in Yemen would be strong assets

- Prefer working in highly predictable environments rather than responding to evolving humanitarian needs and priorities
- Are not comfortable balancing strategic leadership with hands-on technical support to field teams
- Find stakeholder engagement, coordination forums or external representation challenging
- Are not aligned with MdM’s values and activist approach

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
Contract & status:

- Position based in Sanaa but may be temporarily based in Aden depending on the security situation
