Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an independent, non-governmental, and autonomous medical humanitarian organization. Main purpose:
Provides obstetric care to pregnant women and their babies, performs follow-up before, during and after delivery, in accordance with MSF obstetric and reproductive health protocols, universal hygiene and newborn care standards, and under the supervision of a specialist doctor, or physician on duty in order to ensure their health conditions and avoid post-delivery complications.
Objectives and responsibilities:
• Ensure the establishment and continuity of prenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetric care (BEmONC[1] and CEmONC[2]), complete abortion care, management of safe abortions, management of victims of sexual violence, infections of the reproductive system and fistula care in accordance with the core reproductive set of MSF activities, and consolidate the implementation of standardized protocols.
• Where PMTCT is implemented, ensure the implementation of the PMTCT protocol during childbirth and PNC consultations (pre-counseling, testing and post-counseling), or ensure that women giving birth and their babies requiring this service are referred to the care service.
• Collaborate with the doctor and/or nurse/midwife in the management of cases of sexual violence.
• Ensure that hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are respected in accordance with MSF specifications.
• Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of medical equipment according to the instructions in the user manual and protocols. Inform your direct supervisor in case of a malfunction of a medical device.
• Ensure a regular and continuous supply of medications and equipment necessary for maternity activities (including monitoring/consumption control/placing orders/pre-expired/expired items).
• Appropriate follow-up of all newborns from delivery until discharge, informing mothers and parents of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, vaccination (and ensuring that newborns are referred to the vaccination service and vaccinated before discharge from the hospital), family planning (awareness-raising, helping postpartum women make informed decisions before discharge (PPFP=Postpartum Family Planning) and possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
• Ensure that patients’ rights to privacy and confidentiality are respected.
Control that the administrative procedures for admissions and hospitalizations comply with MSF protocols, and also verify that patients are properly informed and receive the necessary documents (birth certificate, vaccination card, PF monitoring card, etc.).
• Participate in the organization of the service in collaboration with the other midwives/nurses and the maternity supervisor. Ensure the transfer of relevant information to the team replacing you (in particular, identification of at-risk cases = handover between teams).
• In accordance with current MSF protocols, conduct normal deliveries independently, ensuring that all women in active labor are monitored using the “Partogram” monitoring tool and that it is completed correctly according to the protocol; manage obstetric emergencies by providing urgent care while informing the team (specialist doctor/supervisor); identify cases requiring referral to another service and send them in a timely manner; provide basic newborn care, including newborn resuscitation if necessary (following the “Help Babies Breathe” resuscitation protocol); detect any abnormalities/infections in the newborn and report them to the doctor to ensure effective interventions. Monitor the use of medications, facilities, and obstetric equipment to ensure rational use based on the number of patients and prescriptions, and ensure that pharmacy stock levels are constantly updated, stored properly, and at a minimum safety level.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities of the MSF Section / Context:
MSF Holland is planning support at the Isaie Jeanty Maternity (MIJ) Teaching Hospital (Chancerelles Hospital) in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Population.
Given the dynamic context of Port-au-Prince, specifically Chancerelles, this position will require flexibility and adaptation to the evolving project activities and security situation.
The role of the MSF midwife would be:
• Provide medical care related to sexual and reproductive health consultations, including consultations for victims of gender-based violence, contraceptives (family planning), gynecological (UI and STIs), as well as consultations for (SAS).
This position may also include prenatal and postnatal consultations, obstetric triage, childbirth, and postpartum and neonatal services, depending on the project’s development. Collaboration with the MSPP and MSF teams and the sharing of key information, while maintaining confidentiality, with the midwifery supervisor, the midwifery activities manager, and the head of the medical department will also be required as needed.
• Ensure that routine and quality care is provided in accordance with established protocols, while being able to manage obstetric emergencies, taking proactive control of the situation and seeking assistance from appropriate colleagues when necessary.
• Raise awareness among patients on topics related to sexual and reproductive health, including the importance of prenatal and postnatal care, family planning after childbirth, breastfeeding practices, care for babies with low birth weight using the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method, and other aspects of sexual and reproductive health.
• Ensure patient confidentiality in accordance with the protocols of the facility and organization. Ensure informed consent of patients, respecting their rights and dignity, while offering appropriate emotional support to promote their well-being throughout their care journey.
• Work closely with other departments within the medical facility (OPD, Triage, laboratory, pharmacy, operating room, etc.) as well as with colleagues from the MSPP and MSF, including psychologists/counselors, supervisors and managers, nurses and doctors, to ensure higher quality care for patients
• Ensure proper documentation of care provided in their department by keeping patient records and medical files up to date.
• Participate in data collection for reports on maternal, neonatal and fetal mortality, as well as in discussions and feedback related to mortality. Participate in interdepartmental discussions.
• Respect and maintain the integrity and proper management of medical equipment, pharmacy stocks and biomedical equipment, ensuring a safe and effective care environment, according to the protocols in place.
• Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control protocols, maintaining high hygiene standards to guarantee patient and staff safety and follow the recommendations of the IPC manager and supervisor.
• Participate in, be coached and support the midwifery supervisor in training less experienced staff in obstetrics and sexual violence.
• Perform additional tasks as instructed by the supervisor.
