Samos Volunteers (SV) is an independent group of volunteers providing non-formal education, psycho-social support and NFI distribution to displaced persons living on Samos.
The Psychosocial Coordinator is responsible for SV’s psychosocial projects for asylum seekers and refugees on the island, including field coordination of our main community space; Alpha Land, our informal education program of English classes, recreational activities and the LGBTQI+ support group, as well as line managing the teachers and community centre volunteer team and supporting the general field coordination efforts.
Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:
- Education program
- Ensuring that the curriculum is up to date and context-appropriate at all times
- Support teachers with their work through inductions, teaching resources, regular check-ins and attendance monitoring.
- Assessing and adapting to educational needs
- Collecting students’ and teachers’ feedback on a regular basis
2. Community centres and field coordination
- Overseeing the 2 community centres, Alpha City (in town) and Alpha Land (by the CCAC)
- Field coordination lead for Alpha Land
- Facilitating psychosocial activity organisation based on community needs and volunteer capacity.
- Liaising with other NGOs and actors to integrate activities and services.
- Supporting volunteer facilitators through check ins, activity design and liaising with the logistics coordinator.
- Ensuring safety and security in our spaces
- Leading the implementation of emergency protocols in emergency situations
3. LGBTQIA+ group
- Planning and co-facilitating the LGBTQIA+ meetings that take place once a week
- Liaising with the dedicated volunteer and other (external) LGBTQIA+ actors
- Participating in the national working group
- Advocacy and awareness raising of LGBTQIA+ matters
- Referrals to and from other organisations as needed
4. Administrative tasks
- Ensuring that key working documents are up to date at all times
- Monitoring and evaluating the education project on a weekly basis
- Participating in the weekly field coordination and community centre meetings
- Participating in the monthly report preparation
- Updating and organising shared platforms (e.g. Google Drive, Trello)
- Attending quarterly board committee meetings
- Finance (ensuring that spendings are within the educational budget; keeping track of receipts; liaising with Sustainability Coordinator about needed donations)
Key Requirements:
- Minimum time commitment of 6 months and ability to stay in Greece without visa support
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong management, decision-making and conflict resolution skills
- Experience in psychosocial support for a minimum of 6 months
- Experience in educational programs for a minimum of 6 months
- Experience working in grassroots organisations (preferably in Greece)
- Flexibility. Living and working on Samos is constantly changing and adapting, and two days never look the same. The ability to be adaptable and flexible is extremely important, as well as an understanding of the complexity and challenges of humanitarian work
- Awareness of cultural sensitivity and displaced communities
- Drivers licence
- Fluent in written and spoken English
Desirable skills, knowledge, experience:
- Farsi, Turkish, Amharic, Tigrayan, Wolof, Kurdish, Arabic, Greek, French or Somali
- Good understanding of the asylum process in Greece
- Background in Education, Mental Health support or Safe Space facilitation.

Further information:
The coordinator will have their reasonable living expenses refunded by the organisation in form of a stipend of 700€ per month. A private room in one of our shared houses is provided free of charge.
Leave policy: All team members are entitled to 1 week for every 2 months of work. There is a mandatory break after 4 months.
The selected candidate will have to be able to provide a criminal record check and two references.
